You will see both BNSF and Union Pacific on the tracks. These tracks are owned by Union Pacific which has a zero tolerance trespassing policy...

Here are some ideas for short trips to train museums and activities that are not too far of a drive. Here are just a few. Tehachapi Railroad Depot Museum The Depot was a railroad station in Tehachapi, California. The depot was built in 1904 along a Southern Pacific Railroad line built in 1876; the railroad founded the town of Tehachapi and drew the residents of nearby Tehichipa to...

  • What's Up in Stallion Springs?

Third time's the charm. The Cleanup Day originally scheduled for February was canceled due to snow and moved to March 5. It was canceled again in March due to the treat of snow and rescheduled for April 9. Finally the stars were with us and April 9 was a winner. There was a waiting line of cars for over a mile across the field behind the CSD and CERT building, down Churchill and Stallion Springs Drive by the time it opened at 9 a.m. The maintenance crew from the CSD were kept busy unloading...

  • BNSF Railway

That BNSF train you see rolling through Tehachapi is one of many. BNSF Railway is a leading freight transportation company, and its rail network is 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces. BNSF is one of the top transporters of the products and materials that help feed, clothe, supply and power communities throughout America and the world. BNSF moves those goods more safely and efficiently, on significantly less fuel, with fewer emissions than the all the trucks on the...

  • Let's hit the rails

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Apr 2, 2022

Early rails were made of wood, cast iron or wrought iron. Modern rails are hot rolled steel with a cross section approximate to an I-beam. The top of the rail is profiled to resist wear and to give a good smooth ride, and the foot profiled to suit the fixing system. Unlike some other uses of iron and steel, railway rails are subject to very high stress and are made of very high-quality steel. It took many decades to improve the quality of the materials and changing from iron to steel. Minor...

  • Railroad ties

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Mar 19, 2022

Railroad ties are traditionally made of wood, but prestressed concrete is now also widely used. Steel ties are common on secondary lines; plastic composite ties are also employed, although far less than wood or concrete. The first use of prestressed concrete ties in the United States was in 1960 when 500 ties were installed on the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and 600 ties were installed on the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, followed by 600,000 ties on the combined Sea- board Coastline Railroad. A...

  • Track maintenance

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Mar 5, 2022

It's that time of year. Every year during February and March the railroad performs maintenance of the tracks in the Tehachapi pass. Railroad maintenance-of-way has long been an important part of railroading. Parked on the tracks, across from the truck stops, was a row of gondolas, open-topped rail cars with low sidewalls, making them ideal for higher-density bulk cargo. Unlike open-topped hoppers, gondolas have no side or bottom release doors and thus cargo must be manually unloaded from the top...

  • The freight car

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Feb 19, 2022

Flatcars were the first type of freight car used in America and date to the 1820s. Flatcars have remained fairly consistent in function: to carry freight that is too heavy, long, tall or wide for boxcars. Flatcar modifications in the 1940s brought about the truck trailer on a flatcar (TOFC) that can be as long as 85 feet. At that length, one can carry two trailers. The freight car has undergone many changes during the 100-plus years of the Tehachapi Pass line. Boxcars, an American invention...

Thanks to the Per Capita Grant from California State Parks, we will be aerating the lake and adding some playground equipment to both Horsethief and Man O' War Park. We will be replacing...

  • The Tehachapi Loop

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Jan 22, 2022

In 1971 when the railroads gave up their passenger train routes to Amtrak, it blocked passenger trains on the route over the Tehachapi Pass. At the peak of railway travel it was used for passenger rail, but the routes they travel now are very limited due to poor profitability. Since then, only cargo trains have used the tracks. There are rare exceptions for the Coast Starlight and other Amtrak trains to use it when their main route is unavailable. It is a relatively rare thing to watch trains...

  • Centerbeam cars

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Jan 8, 2022

Lumber trains pass through Tehachapi on a regular basis headed from the northwest, Oregon and Washington, for various purposes. Centerbeam cars are used to transport lumber and other wood products used to build our walls, doors, roofs and floors. One centerbeam rail car can carry enough framing lumber to build about six homes. Most standard centerbeam rail cars are 73 feet long and can carry 200,000 pounds. BNSF has some centerbeams that are 81 feet long and can carry 216,000 pounds. We all know...
