So, what do a small, green, plush Hedgehog toy, Henry's Café, mountain rescuers and Slice of Life Enrichment School have in common? Read on and you will find out. On Tuesday, May 28 Susan Minor, the owner of Slice of Life Enrichment School, where art, music and languages are taught, was waiting to be seated for breakfast at Henry's Cafe. Suddenly, her ears pricked up! Did she hear someone speaking French? She looked around quickly to find out where the French voices were coming from. She saw...

  • The dangers of encountering elk

    Fiona Nelson|Sep 1, 2018

What do reindeer and elk have in common? Antlers. Impressively big antlers in some cases. Now, why in an article about elk, would I mention reindeer? The answer to that question is, to introduce the idea of how dangerous these animals can be. Reindeer are, generally, much smaller than elk and many are semi-domesticated. They are a huge part of the way of life of certain circumpolar peoples. Although semi-domesticated, and they are even milked in some cases, this does not mean that reindeer are "...

Do you know which plant is so toxic that horses which have died from eating it have been found with the leaves still in their mouths? This is how Erika Williams started her presentation to the Carriage Club members at their July meeting. The answer is Oleander, and I am happy to report that we could answer correctly. This was an example of the kinds of questions that Erika faced at the recent Pony Club Kentucky Quiz Championships. A couple of months ago Gary Yettner and Debbie Swarens gave a...

June and July have been busy, action packed, fun months for the Carriage Club. On June 17, we held one of our clicker training workshops. These events are wonderful to watch. The most interesting thing is to see how the equines learn new skills and progress. One of the best parts of clicker training is that the animals really enjoy it, and are focused and engaged. Of course it takes time and patience for an equine and human team to master the skills involved and become proficient at new...

March's Ride and Drive was held out of Cal City. Conditions were perfect, not too hot, not too cold, and no wind. The trails were in very good condition with no deep sand for minis to flounder in! Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. The outing was topped off by a delicious lunch at Gloria's Mexican Restaurant. As we all know, the Carriage Club has excellent cooks, so their praise of the food at Gloria's is praise indeed! The Club's March meeting featured Rosemary from Thunderpaws Dog Training...

After a particularly nerve-wracking summer due to the number of fires we had in our local communities, it is wonderful to now receive much-needed precipitation. As I sit here and write this, the rain is pounding down outside and the winds are blowing the poor long-suffering oak trees around. The earlier rainfalls that we received reminded me of the words of one of my favorite childhood hymns – 'He sends the snow in winter.... And soft, refreshing rain' (from 'We Plough the Fields'). The "soft, r...

Are you becoming bored with the media constantly harping on about California's current drought conditions? Are you a little tired of hearing over and over that this year is the one in which you should ensure you are prepared for an emergency if you haven't done so before now? After all, what really are the chances that we may be struck by or endangered by wildfire? Well, in the middle of June a group of BVS residents took a trip up to Wildhorse Equestrian Camp and ended up discovering exactly ho...
