If you haven't had the chance to experience the Tehachapi Community Theatre at the historic BeeKay Theatre Downtown, I would encourage you to make it a priority in the coming year. I took the opportunity to accompany family to 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever' during its final weekend and needless to say, I was impressed. The production was cast almost entirely with our local children, telling the story about troubled kids initially using the concept of a Christmas pageant as a chance to hang ou...
As we enjoy the holiday shopping season, I hope you're taking notice of our local 'Buy 1' initiative. It's a challenge of sorts from the City to our citizens to make the effort to purchase at least one gift this year from a local small business. We understand that buying every gift here locally might not be possible, but our economic development team feels like one gift is reasonable. Honestly, after discovering everything our local shops have to offer, you'll most-likely be able to find...
Mayor Ed Grimes handed me a treasure one day, it was a small textbook printed in 1928 from the High School Home Studies Bureau entitled "The Blue Book of Civics". It sits as a display piece in my office, an antiquity, but a useful one at that. Much of what was written and taught in 1928 still surprisingly applies today, nothing more so than the first chapter on the first page that answers the basic question, "What is a Community?" The answer from the book: "A community is a group of people who...
I'd like to thank The Coffee Mill, one of our great local businesses for hosting myself and Mayor Ed Grimes at our first 'Coffee with the Mayor and City Manager." We had several great conversations with residents and we left with more ideas on ways to continue to support the citizens of our community. This initiative is the latest of several communications-focused efforts by the City to keep the public informed on what we're working on, projects happening in our community and simply get to know...
It’s been said that a government’s budget is its most clear policy document. For the City of Tehachapi, the budget adopted by the City Council on June 5, 2017 should demonstrate that the City’s policy priority continues to be fiduciary responsibility of taxpayer funds. With projected General Fund revenues of $6.58 million and General Fund expenditures expected to total $6.48 million, the City is continuing its tradition of positively balanced budgets, just as it did throughout the reces...
The City of Tehachapi and staff would like to invite everyone to the annual Fourth of July Hot Dog Festival. This will be our fifteenth year in collaboration with Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District on this annual family fun-filled day. This will also be our fifteenth time hosting the great celebration at Philip Marx Central Park and Coy Burnett Field. In years past, we have entertained thousands and we are expecting an even larger crowd at this year's bigger and better celebration of...
On May 30, the Nation observed Memorial Day. I'm sure that most of you, like me, reflected on the sacrifices that so many men and women have made to protect our nation and our freedoms. How blessed we are as a nation because of their service! The very next day, I had the chance to accompany several City Council members, including Mayor Susan Wiggins, Councilman Phil Smith, and our Councilwoman and Honorary Commander, Kim Nixon, to a reception at Edwards Air Force Base to meet the Secretary of...
Last week, I attended a meeting at the Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Parks District, as I often do, and I was approached by someone there who thanked me for the Christmas lights at our Wastewater Treatment Facility. This person told me that he enjoyed seeing the lights on his nightly commute and that they gave him the feeling of being home. Though the lights are temporary, they serve as a bit of a landmark for him, and maybe some others, that indicate they can relax and enjoy this great place...
Last week, I had the opportunity to see a new movie. I sat in the dark, with a drink and a bucket of popcorn, and enjoyed the fruits of labor performed by hundreds of people who either wrote, produced, directed, designed, built, supported, or marketed the movie. After the movie, it occurred to me that I now had an opinion about the final results of their labors and could criticize the set design, the length of the movie, the quality of the dialogue, or any one of the million pieces that go into...
Thanksgiving is here already! Can you believe it? This a great time of year in Tehachapi and I’m grateful for this wonderful community. In the spirit of this gracious holiday, I’d like to take the opportunity offer my own sincere thanks for some of the many things I am grateful for. First and foremost, I am thankful to live under the flag of our great nation. Each year, as elections come and go peacefully, I’m reminded that despite our shortcomings and disagreements, we are still a nation full...
Over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot about the upcoming elections in Tehachapi, and the candidates and issues that will be considered by voters as they cast their ballot this November. As an employee of the City and not an elected official, my role is to manage the day to day business of the City and to avoid political discourse when possible. Instead of engaging in political debate best left to those individuals running for office, my staff and I do our best to provide facts and i...
One of the best things about being the City Manager of this great city is that I have seen the improvements we’ve made over time. I can be proud that we’ve delivered projects that, I believe, have increased the quality of life for the residents of Tehachapi. What’s more, our team is working every day to develop future improvements that I know we will all be proud of as we continue our community’s forward progress. In the last decade, we have designed, funded, and constructed over $20 million in...
At a recent City Council meeting, I asked our Interim Public Works Director, Jon Curry, to briefly address the Council about the current drought conditions and what it may mean for the City's water supply. Jon is our former Utility Manager and is a board member of the California Rural Water Association and he was well prepared to summarize the current and future water issues facing our City. I will do my best to summarize his presentation but I also want to share some of the exciting initiatives...
