Many people relocate to Tehachapi for the beautiful nature and proximity to the creatures who live here. It's amazing to live in a town where deer, birds, raccoons and wildcats casually roam through your yard. Sue Hammer, the founder of Tehachapi Wildlife Rehab and Education, said this desire to be close to nature too often comes with a lack of understanding and compassion for local wildlife. "They were here first, they didn't do anything. We moved in, we didn't pay them for their land, we've...
My daughter and I started a fun tradition when we moved back to Tehachapi a couple of years ago. Mommy, daughter dates at The Spirited Bead. It's one of those unique, tucked away businesses that makes Tehachapi a special place for me. Karen Lewis, known as Klew, opened The Spirited Bead 19 years ago this May. Klew said customers encouraged the idea of a storefront after seeing her work at craft fairs. The idea took off and Klew and her assistant began working on the details. "A year or so later...
Last week, a woman walked into Tompkins Elementary School with a beautiful goal. She met with the principal of the school to share her desire to help a family in need. She was directed to Hortencia Tapia, the food services supervisor for Tehachapi Unified School District, to look into the possibility of paying off some unpaid lunch bills from elementary students in Tehachapi. The calculations began. All of the unpaid lunch bills for Tehachapi's three elementary schools was too much for one...
David SteeleReed was drawn back to Tehachapi by the community arts and friendly faces in town. The Tehachapi native moved to Seattle for two years, but found the cold, wet climate not to his liking. He is back in his hometown now and was recently named Executive Producer of the Tehachapi Community Theatre. His first production, "The Importance of Being Earnest," is playing now. "I'm enjoying being back in the Tehachapi theater scene and back home at TCT after a two year absence. I took two...
Our little mountain town has a lot of unique features. One of my favorites is its connection to the beautiful Pacific Crest Trail. Downtown Tehachapi is just about 9-miles from two PCT Trailheads, which brings more than a thousand hikers to our town each year between April and August. I love hiking, but have never ventured out on the PCT, which runs from Mexico to Canada. Seeing the hikers and hearing their stories from the trail is exciting and full of mystery. Tehachapi has more than 40...
For Barbara Teague's former students, that twinkle and her dedication to every one of them will be what they remember forever. Her death in October took her away too soon, but the lessons she taught and encouragement she provided lives on. "She was an exceptional teacher, someone you were lucky to have," said former student David SteeleReed. Comments about the former Tehachapi English instructor share a common theme -- excellence. "No matter how complicated the language or writing was ... she...
A new year is just another day on the calendar, but the symbolic switch holds so much hope and opportunity. Although Tehachapi is my hometown, I feel there are many experiences and examples of small town charm that I never take advantage of. This year, I want to participate in more of them. Keeping with the theme of this column, here's a list of 18 activities you can do in Tehachapi this year that promote and embrace the small town charm we know and love. 1. Adorable Alpacas: Who can resist...
Simple acts of kindness can be incredibly powerful and during the holidays, they have the power to change tears of worry to tears of gratefulness and joy. This Christmas, volunteers with Sharing and Caring will bring lots of smiles to families in need. The nonprofit, which was started by Joan Siglin in 1998, provided supplies for a full day of Christmas meals, toys, wrapping paper, toiletries, blankets, etc. to 27 families and 52 children in Tehachapi. "The (Christmas giveaway) is mayhem, but...
Most students from Tehachapi High School are familiar with the leaf project. Each year, science students are asked to complete a special nature assignment. In my day, depending on the time of year that you took the class, you'd either complete a leaf or bug project. Our goal was to locate samples of various leaf varieties or creepy crawlies. I was thankful to fall in leaf season. Both because the idea of catching, killing and then pinning bugs to a board completely repulsed me and because I'm...
Gina Christopher has fostered and found homes for nearly 700 cats during her 10 year career in animal rescue. "I'm the original crazy cat lady," she said. Have a Heart Humane Society works every day of the year fighting for the welfare of local animals, and spreading awareness about the overpopulation of pets in Kern County. Their mission: "We just want to save as many homeless pets as possible. Reduce the number of pets, specifically here in Tehachapi, that would end up in the high kill...
I grew up in Tehachapi. I learned to ride my bike while avoiding tumbleweeds, learned to drive a car in weather that can change in an instant, and got my first job - making pizzas at Little Caesars. I moved away for college to study journalism, but moved back nearly two years ago to raise my family in this unique little town. So much has changed, but the things that remain the same and the people who work to preserve the charming small town atmosphere, help it to still feel like home. These are...
With many happy hoots and hollers, Tehachapi High School students enthusiastically welcomed local veterans to campus Thursday, Nov. 9. Student-crafted art and decorations covered the THS gym for the school's 10th annual Veterans Day Assembly. After refreshments in their honor, local veterans entered the gym to a standing ovation and loud applause from students and staff. Judging by the smiles on the faces of both students and their invited guests, this is an event that means a lot to all...
Curious little fingers dance across dozens of instruments lining the floor of Mountain Music. They may not know the chords and melodies yet, but students in the Tunes N Totz music class keep the rhythm going. "It's exciting to see a room full of littles, some who can't even walk yet, have a desire to shake, strum, pluck and make music," said music teacher Amy Rodriguez. "They just enjoy that sound." Guitars, violins, drums, shakers and xylophones are just a few of the instruments available to...
