A very obnoxious weed with a pretty name: Yellow Starthistle (YST). This scourge on the land of the western U.S. was discovered in the Tehachapi area and BVS in the early 1990s by Chuck McCollough (founder of Triassic Legacy Winery). In Northern California, yellow starthistle is out of control, wasting over 15 million acres of range and farm land. We do not want it to get any more out of control here. This very invasive weed is unpleasant, as it has sharp needles around each flower, which...
CalTrans has recently had roadside trash picked up along Highway 202 from the four-way stop at Cummings Valley Road to Tucker Road. This was a big project, as the amount of litter was considerable, particularly in the area of Old Town. I was embarrassed to think that visitors to our area were seeing the pride of Tehachapi – NOT! To demonstrate our pride in the Greater Tehachapi area, we should encourage every organization in this area to adopt a section of Highway 202 to keep litter free. I hate to think of the many months and the amount of t...
The mid-May day arrived clear and warm for the semi-annual trash pickup of the Bear Valley Springs Litter Loathers. This group of BVS residents keeps the roadsides outside the gate of Bear Valley Road to Cummings Valley Road to 202 free of roadside trash. Only seven people were on hand to handle this over three-mile stretch; they definitely needed more help! Those faithful workers were Carol Hellyer, Linda and Rick Flores, Linda Coverdale, Laurie Rude-Betts and Kathy Underwood and Ingrid...

We last picked up the two Kern County roads outside of BVS from the gate to Hwy. 202 in early March. The litter pictured was an example of that which appeared all along both roads. We encourage all residents to be careful not to litter, as it shows disrespect for...
We didn't want a dog. So when Ben came home from his 6 a.m. run in Griffith Park on a foggy, Monday morning with a dog, we hoped to find its owners. When Ben came into the bedroom and showed me this dog, who was standing on the patio outside our bedroom, I said to him, "That is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen - what kind of dog is that?" I was uttering the exact words that hundreds of family, friends and complete strangers would utter for the next 12 years. That day, because the dog had...
