  • How to not burn out when you're on fire

Sarah Rose, Healthy Hippie Trading Co.|Dec 23, 2023

If there's ever a time of year when people are in danger of burn out, it's during the holiday season. As a small business owner, burn out is something that has plagued me pretty much every season. It's only since I was diagnosed as having ADHD that I became aware of my pattern of "being on fire" for weeks at a time and then suddenly feeling completely burned out and unable to function at all for days or weeks. This pattern of being on fire then burning out was taking its toll on my mental and ph...

  • The pentagram: sacred or sinister?

Sarah Rose, Healthy Hippie Trading Co.|Dec 9, 2023

Like many people who grew up in the Christian church, I viewed the pentagram with suspicion. What I thought I knew about the five-pointed star made it something I wanted to avoid. As this symbol keeps showing up on tapestries, jewelry, books and other items that I have in my store, the Healthy Hippie Trading Co., I decided to do some research on this pointy star and share what I learned with others who might be misinformed like I was. The pentagram is an ancient symbol used by many cultures and...

  • Heathen's Greetings

Sarah Rose, Healthy Hippie Trading Co.|Nov 25, 2023

Several years ago, in early December, I was sitting on my couch sipping a cup of spiced apple cider, feeling quite proud of myself. The tree was up, the entire house was decorated, the stockings were hung on the mantle and a sprig of mistletoe was hanging in the doorway. As I sat there, basking in a sense of accomplishment, I suddenly had an image of Jesus walking through the door. "Wow!" he said, in my imagination. "Your home looks so festive. What's the occasion?" With delight, I replied,...

  • Kennedy Meadows

    Sarah Rose, contributing writer|Jul 23, 2022

Just under two hours north of Tehachapi is the lovely valley of Kennedy Meadows. At 6427' elevation this area is referred to by the Pacific Crest Trail hikers as the area where the desert meets the Sierra. As a trail angel in Tehachapi, I heard about this place from the hikers who stayed with us at Hippie Hiker Haven and I found myself intrigued by it. The hikers had just covered over 500 miles of desert and they were anxious to get out of the desert and into the Sierra. Kennedy Meadows is...

  • Golden Hills Nature Preserve

    Sarah Rose, contributing writer|Jun 11, 2022

Over the past month or so, there has been a plethora of people on foot in the downtown area of Tehachapi. These folks with tanned, strong legs, often wearing backpacks that seem to weigh more than they do, are Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) hikers. They are in town to rest, refuel and recharge before getting back on the trail. In hiker lingo these are called "zero" days: a day where they are not gaining any mileage to the end the trail which is still over 2,000 miles away at the Canadian border. Not...

  • Wind Wolves Preserve

    Sarah Rose, contributing writer|Apr 16, 2022

Sixty-two miles west of Tehachapi, hidden among the orange orchards and random oil wells of southwest Bakersfield lies the Wind Wolves Preserve. Located just off the 166 (Maricopa Hwy) about 5 miles west of the 5, it is easy to miss the sign as there is absolutely nothing visible from the highway that even slightly hints at the beauty in the hills to the south. I was scanning the horizon for cottonwoods and waterfalls, the whole time thinking this place can't possibly be out here. I was wrong....
