  • Lighting the menorah: a Chanukah tradition

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 4, 2021

On Nov. 29, the second day of Chanukah, Tehachapi's Jewish community and friends met in front of Moses Master Carpet on Tehachapi Blvd. for faith, fun, fellowship, and food. Rabbi Shmuli Schlanger journeyed up from Bakersfield to preside over the ceremony of lighting the menorah, singing traditional Hebrew songs and sharing his message of faith. The Rabbi prefaced his presentation by saying, "Chanukah is a very important holiday, not just for the Jewish faith, but for faith." He told the story o...

  • Our Cleaner Planet: cleaning up the mess

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 4, 2021

Being a mountain community, we don't often think of Tehachapi in connection with the environmental issues plaguing our planet's oceans. But I recently had the honor of speaking to Pat Marshall, Tehachapi resident and founder of Our Cleaner Planet (OCP). OCP is a nonprofit startup that has developed an innovative way to remove plastics from the ocean. Marshall started out in aviation, working with his father at a small airport in Lompoc, California. In 2010, he moved to Tehachapi and went to...

  • Children's book author discusses 'The Night Jesus Met Santa Claus'

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Dec 4, 2021

I recently met up with Rob Saranpa at Kamenz Kafe (formerly The Coffee Mill) to talk about his children's book, The Night Jesus Met Santa Claus. To look at him, Saranpa looks more like a tattooed rock musician than a children's book author. In fact, he is both. Before converting to Christianity, Saranpa's resume would have read something like, "touring rock musician, biker bar bouncer and collector for drug dealers." When he became a single dad, sole custodian of his ten-month-old son, that was...

  • Support and events for local veterans

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Nov 20, 2021

Jason Stanley and Kevin Davey spoke at the Rotary Club on Nov. 4, sharing about local events and organizations that honor and support veterans in various ways. Stanley, the Quality Advocate Specialist at Airstreams Renewables, spoke first. He told how the company was founded in 2003 by Dave Schulgen. It started in Tehachapi and is now on seven military bases, nationwide. Airstreams' core values, "accountability, respect and integrity," are effectuated in many ways, but chiefly by serving...

  • Taco Bell renovation

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Nov 20, 2021

On Nov. 13, Tehachapi's only Taco Bell restaurant closed to begin a complete renovation, the first since opening in 1992. District Manager Mirabel Medina was reluctant to say how long the restaurant will be closed while the work is done, but she said similar projects have taken over two months to complete. In addition to updating the look of the building to be in better step with Taco Bell's current style and branding, the kitchen and drive-thru will be fully modernized. In the meantime, we'll...

  • What were we thinking? A look back at the toilet paper shortage of 2020

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Nov 20, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic (shortened from "COrona VIrus Disease, 2019") has caused so much disruption and upheaval to our daily lives. All around the world, people have had to make considerable changes to adapt to the shelter-in-place strictures and other mandates placed on us by health and governmental agencies. Although the pandemic is ongoing, we seem to have turned a corner. Looking back at the "Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020," a lot of people are still baffled. What caused it? "Many...

  • Jon Hammond speaks to Rotary Club

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Nov 6, 2021

The Rotary Club was regaled on Oct. 14 by Tehachapi's favorite local historian, Jon Hammond. Hammond is a locally celebrated and respected contributor of The Loop newspaper, Tehachapi News, The Bakersfield Californian and other local publications. His articles and columns focus mainly on Tehachapi history, agriculture and local wildlife. He did not disappoint, educating and delighting his audience with an overview of the agricultural history of the Tehachapi Valley from ancient times to the...

  • The humble origins of toilet paper

    Tanya Joham, staff writer|Nov 6, 2021

Toilet paper is such a necessity today, it's hard to imagine life without it. So how did people handle their business before toilet paper was available? Depending on where they lived and what the climate was like, people used a wide array of materials for the purpose such as coconut husks, moss, leaves, pottery shards and even handfuls of snow. Brrr! In Ancient Greece, people used smooth stones or malleable clay. In the communal bathrooms of Ancient Rome, they often used their bare hands, which...
