  • Ladybug Meadow: a winter getaway for a beloved insect

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

Up in the mountains south of the town of Tehachapi is a little opening in the forest where tens of thousands of ladybugs gather each year to overwinter in dense clusters of orange and black beetles. Entomologists call them Convergent Lady Beetles (Hippodamia convergens). Of course most of us know them as "ladybugs," but scientists prefer other terms because there is a distinct group of insects known as "bugs," such as milkweed bugs or boxelder bugs, that have different characteristics from lady...

  • Kern County retires helicopter after 24 years of service

    Mark La Ciura, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

I have seen Kern County Fire department "Bell Huey" helicopters fly in the Tehachapi area for many years. Helicopter H408 began its service in 1968, serving in the Vietnam War. It served as a medical Helo-chopper as part of the Army's 117th Assault Helicopter Company. H408 suffered a serious crash in 1970. An explosion occurred onboard, shearing its tail boom and shredding its mast. Four soldiers were injured on landing. Those soldiers survived, but H408 was retired by the military. The...

  • End of an era

    Virginia Sheridan, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

It's been a wonderful 12 years, but all good things must come to an end. Sheridan's will soon be closing. It has been both rewarding and fun helping people find new homes for their treasures, as well as helping others create beautiful spaces in their own homes. Shopping with my daughter for new merchandise to add that eclectic touch has built many great memories for the two of us that I will always treasure. The friendships I have made with my customers, and knowing what a special place this has...

  • A look behind, a look ahead

    Clare Scotti, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

The last two weeks of the year have traditionally been slower for the Chamber. With businesses and visitors focused elsewhere, it is a good time to reflect on the work that was accomplished in the past year and to set goals for the next. It's a time to rest, regroup and re-energize. Looking at 2024, the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce started off strong in January with a networking luncheon that brought Tehachapi's nonprofit organizations face-to-face with dozens of business owners. This...

  • Happy New Year 2025!

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

Well, we made it through another year. Although 2024 was a difficult one in many ways, it was also a good one in other ways. It was a year full of surprises and loss, rewards and disappointments, hope and despair. Many ups and downs. Just like most years. Usually when a new year rolls around and we all put up our new calendars, I like to write a rah-rah-sis-boom-bah column about the joy of possibilities; never mind what went before, the new calendar is a clean slate! A time for new beginnings!...

  • Happy New Year Greetings from Mojave Air & Space Port at Rutan Field!

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

I have always loved the sights and sounds of airplanes. You know how certain sights and sounds stay in your memory bank forever? I remember when my husband Al and I were standing near the flagpole at Mojave Air & Space Port during a plaque dedication ceremony honoring all U.S. Marines and personnel who served at Marine Corps Air Station Mojave. Al looked at me and said, "Here comes Dick Lawyer!" We were looking toward the South down Airport Blvd. that Memorial Day in 1996. To this day, I still...

  • It's time for some New Year resolutions

    Phyllis Belcher, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

In January, many people make New Years resolutions only to break them a few weeks later. However, that is not always the case. Last year, leaders of Tehachapi Heritage League made some resolutions to improve the Tehachapi Museum. They began by arranging for repairs to the building and cleaning out storage areas. They improved the labeling of exhibits and planned new and rotating exhibits. THL leaders are well on the way to fulfilling their resolutions and their resolve continues through 2025. One of the new exhibits is a display of purple...

Surrounded by her friends, family and avid customers, Joanne shared a story about how her first location was destroyed by a fire several months ago. The loss would have encouraged others to shutter their doors for good, but with the help of the community who rallied behind her, Joanne rose from the ashes and...

  • New year, new you?

Rev. Joshua Pierce, MDiv, RADT, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

The new year has always been celebrated as a time for transition into new and better things. Those things differ from individual to individual and usually take the form of New Year's Resolutions. At this time of year, any business with a membership or subscription is offering deals. My favorite are the gyms who offer deals on membership for the new year. They anticipate that within a few weeks of joining the majority of people who made a resolution to get in shape will abandon their resolution...

    Mark La Ciura, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

While having coffee with a musician friend of mine on Dec. 21, I found out he would be playing with Southern Sierra Pops Orchestra that day at the Shepherd of the Hills Church. The set list was a great mix of classic Christmas songs. The orchestra is 27 musicians strong, and conducted by James Reddish. We heard 12 classic Christmas song selections with guest singer, soloist Christina Scrivner, who joined the orchestra for "Panis Angelicus." Some of the other songs included, "Fantasy on the...

  • Purple Houses

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Jan 4, 2025

Perhaps you have lived in the same town all your life. If you are like me, you have moved dozens of times. Oddly enough, in all those moves, I am only about 100 miles from where I started. After finding the book "The Only Purple House in Town," by Ann Aguirre, I suddenly remembered all the purple houses I encountered along the way. Several were Victorian, one moved precariously whole in the middle of the night, and set down on new property, to be ogled with awe by neighbors the next morning....

  • Happy New Year 2025!

    Lily La B, contributing writer|Jan 4, 2025

According to "National Geographic," the practice of New Year's resolutions has been around since the time of the Babylonians, some 4,000 years ago. They started their new year on the vernal equinox (first day of spring), usually around March 20. This was the time to plant crops, crown their king and pay off their debts. A common resolution of the time was to return borrowed farm equipment. Eventually, the Romans (approximately 46 B.C.) took up the concept. However, they aligned the Babylonian...
