Teresa Dunlop has worked in health food service for almost twenty years. She completed a series of courses in Holistic Health at Ventura College. It is a life-long passion of hers to bring healthy choices to customers. She moved to Tehachapi in 2011 and "fell in love" with the natural beauty and wonderful people. She soon saw a need for Tehachapi Natural Market. While the major chains may have products they lacked the personal expertise and customer attention that a local health food store offer...
"It is a dream come true," says Jose Guevara of Gold Mountain Sports Tavern, his new restaurant located at 20601 W. Valley Blvd. in Tehachapi. The idea of a sports bar was his dream ten years ago in 2008 when he first planned to open a restaurant in Tehachapi. That dream had to take a back seat when the opportunity came along to open Don Perico's Mexican Restaurant on Valley Blvd. That family restaurant has been so successful that they have just signed a lease for another ten years. On December...
Slice of Life Enrichment School in Tehachapi is now pleased to offer Spanish classes to all students age 5 through adult. Our program is a full-immersion style program directed by Meliza Flores. For Barbara Teague's former students, that twinkle and her dedication to every one of them will be what they remember forever. Her death in October took her away too soon, but the lessons she taught and encouragement she provided lives on. "She was an exceptional teacher, someone you were lucky to have," said former student David SteeleReed. Comments about the former Tehachapi English instructor share a common theme -- excellence. "No matter how complicated the language or writing was ... she...
Got kids? We know that sometimes they can be jokingly referred to as "our little tax deductions", so let's begin at the beginning. When little Susie is born, her parents (you) must apply for a social security number (SSAN) for her before you leave the hospital. In the case of a home birth, you must apply and receive a SSAN before you can claim her as a dependent on your tax return. The IRS requires you to list a social security number for each dependent you claim on your tax return. Susie now be...
Every now and then I come across some especially interesting story – something I didn't write but kind of wish I would have – and if there is no copyright infringement involved, I like to share it. These days I get a lot of neat things via email and several of the social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, but the story below is one I got by hand from my mother some years ago. Mom didn't remember where or when she got it except that it was a long time ago (like in the 40s or 50s) – she hand...
Starting March 17, 2014, veterans who have a VA compensation rating of 100% permanent and total (P&T) may receive expedited processing of applications for Social Security disability benefits. What do I need to know about the VA and Social Security programs? Both Social Security and VA pay disability benefits. However, their programs, processes, and criteria for receiving benefits are very different. A VA compensation rating of 100% Permanent and Total does not guarantee that you will receive...
I've said it before many times, but it's worth repeating: The City is a collection of businesses whose services are designed to enhance the quality of life for Tehachapi residents. Some of our businesses like the water and wastewater departments, directly affect every City resident. Others, like Development Services, often have less of a direct-effect, but still impact the quality of life for all. One of our most-unique businesses, one that has the potential to affect nearly everyone but often g...

Buying long-term care (LTC) insurance is an option. While premiums may be costly, having LTC insurance may allow you to elect where you receive your care, the type of care you receive, and who provides care to you. Many LTC insurance policies pay for the cost of care provided in a nursing home, assisted-living facility, or at home, but the cost of coverage generally depends on your age and the policy benefits and options you purchase. And premiums can increase if the insurer raises its overall...

As usual I searched my mother Marion Deaver's files and found an article about the creation and dedication of Coy Burnett Athletic Field in Tehachapi. As usual, my mom did not have a date on the article. I checked with Mayor Ed Grimes, the "voice of the Warriors" and he said that field was constructed in the late '50s. Anyone with a more accurate date can contact me and I will mention the date in a future column. The field was dedicated on a Saturday when Tehachapi played Trona, for the...
