The Desert Rose Garden Club Of California City has finished the wrought iron fence around the Remembrance Rose Garden. A project that had been put on the back burner for a while, Tawney Sparks jumped in head first and got it across the finish line. A generous $4,000 donation from a friend was quite helpful, also. The project was completed in three phases. The old wire and pole fence was removed and replaced with the very nice wrought iron. Next was the arbor to the entrance, donated by club...

The fencing will be post and rail and placed one foot north of the concrete path. Openings will be supplied allowing for maintenance vehicles to...

Winter has definitely arrived in our Tehachapi Mountains, and in the surrounding valleys. Some people like to use winter as an excuse to stay in and stay warm, others like to get out and be active in the cooler weather. For those in the latter group, today I'm suggesting a few good places to take a nice easy walk this winter – great places to get out and enjoy nature that won't leave you huffing and puffing, and that are easy to get to. One of my favorite places is the Arthur B. Ripley Desert W...
When I was a kid, I loved playing board games and card games with the cousins, and then with the adults as I got older. I especially remember hours of Monopoly with cousin Steven and Chinese Checkers with the other cousins, and Clue and the card game Touring with the aunts and uncles. As a teen and young adult, I spent many a happy hour playing Casino with my mom, and Life, Sorry, S*** on Your Neighbor, Spoons and Uno with friends and family. When I went to college, I was warned not to learn to...
When you plan to retire at a certain age, you can follow a strategy that incorporates your investment moves, your health insurance and other factors. But what happens if you're forced to retire earlier than you anticipated? Unfortunately, this situation is not that uncommon. About 40% of Americans say they have been forced into retirement, according to a recent survey from Edward Jones and Morning Consult, a research firm. If this were to happen to you because of a layoff, company downsizing or...
Now that 2023 has come to an end, as your Second District Kern County Supervisor, I want to share with you some of what we at the county has accomplished over this past year, and what the residents of Kern County have to look forward to in 2024. Over the past decade, the county has been impacted by significant fiscal challenges, which has resulted in reduced budgets, difficulty in staffing key positions and fewer investments in public services and amenities. I know the impact of this has not...
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) wants Californians to be aware of several new laws taking effect in the new year. The laws listed below take effect on January 1, 2024, unless otherwise noted. Driver’s License Renewal Alternatives – AB 1606 (Gipson) Authorizes the DMV Director to establish a program to evaluate the traffic safety and other effects of renewing driver’s licenses by virtual or other remote processes. This is in addition to current online renewal options offered to most drivers under 70 years old. The progr...
Nuwä basketweavers were some of the finest basketmakers in California, a state that historically has been home to many of the country's best basketmaking traditions. One of them was a lady named Rosie Hicks. Rosie was born about 1890 and was the daughter of Luisa (Louise) Marcus, who was the grandmother of noted Nuwä (Kawaiisu or Southern Paiute) elder Andy Greene, who is depicted on the Nuwä mural on the side of the Hitching Post Theaters on Green Street in Downtown Tehachapi. Andy has passed a...
Here in Tehachapi, we have a wealth of informative retired folks from the military, many of which worked at Edwards AFB Flight Test Center. So I think this would be of interest to friends and family of these service men and women to see this "Peace Keeper" aircraft. Many I bet worked on jets, maybe flew jets in the military. This historic aircraft is on display just east on highway 58, about 60 miles from Tehachapi at the north gate of Edwards AFB. I was a freelance photographer for a few years...
January is a good month to dream as it is the month that we honor Martin Luther King Jr. We are reminded of his dream speech and his desire for a time when promises of freedom, justice and equality becomes a reality for all. There are so many books on King, written for all ages and all kinds of readers. The book I enjoy the most is the illustrated picture book "I Have a Dream" with its simplicity and vibrant art embracing the spirit of King's speech and giving weight and purpose to each one of...
