When they are not in Tehachapi, they live and work in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angelescounty. Jack owns Tate Heating and Air Conditioning, “The Weather Changers”, located in Mis...

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires all U.S. residents to obtain health care insurance by January 1, 2014 or face possible penalties. You must (a) maintain existing health insurance coverage which meets ACA standards, or (b) buy a plan that meets ACA standards, or (c) pay a tax for failure to have the required coverage. The penalties help pay for health insurance for those who can’t afford it. The IRS currently cannot make you pay the penalties, they can only reduce your tax refunds by the amount of the penalty (hence many people are reducin...
Apparently our brains have a tendency to shrink as we get older. Brain shrinkage is often a precursor of Alzheimer’s disease, according to British researchers. More research is coming. Recently, the Bakersfield Californian newspaper ran an article from these researchers suggesting the possibility that the intake of the vitamin B complex will prevent our brains from shrinking as we age and may well prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s. Personally, I do not want my brain shrinking at all. I am pretty...
The artist has had an interest in aviation and space exploration history all of his life. He also has a strong passion for art and art history. ackie Cameron ran the Marley's Mutts spay and neuter program. She was so overwhelmed by its success, that she wrote the following as a thank you to participants and volunteers Tears fill my eyes as I write this; I feel that words will never be able to fully express what I am about to attempt. While attending the monthly animal control meeting I was presented with a set of numbers. These numbers broke me down; they hit me like a bus on the street. They were the intake numbers for all dogs in our...

“Valentine’s Day is coming up!” I announced excitedly, as the kids and I drove down Tehachapi Boulevard. “And everyone knows what that means, right?” “Hand cramps from writing ‘I love you’?” guessed my oldest son glumly, while my younger two went ballistic with excitement. “That’s right,” I answered, confirming his worst nightmare as we pulled into the KMart parking lot. I had every intention of raiding the collection of school-age Valentine’s while the selection was still good. I could hardl...
Well, here we are in a brand new year with hopefully a brighter outlook on just about everything. The first month of this fresh year is well on its way out and by the time you read this we will be dodging Cupid’s arrows, or hiding in plain sight to be struck by same. February is not a popular month for weddings, but it is a wonderful month to be reminded of love due to Valentine’s Day. The promise of spring is just around the corner and there is still enough winter left to cuddle up with your sw...

It’s often true that parents and their offspring have different ideas about what constitutes “good music”. Perhaps I lucked out, having grown up with Gary Mazzola and Joy Gray, both talented songwriters and musicians, as parents. Music was something personal, made right there in our home. Some of my earliest memories include the harmony of their voices, the strumming of guitars and their creative lyrics. While I can’t speak for how they may have felt about some of my music choices growing up, I feel privileged to say that the music they ma...

Wikipedia says that monoculture is growing a single crop over wide regions. This provides advantages since the farmers can concentrate on developing techniques to maximize yields for only one crop. So they can develop machines that can efficiently harvest one type of fruit or grain. Crops can be developed that are specifically designed to do well in a specific area. But monoculture has its disadvantages, too. It makes large regions more susceptible to diseases. Think of things like the Irish...
Best year ever! Does that sound familiar? It probably does, I wrote a column just last year about how much this community has stepped up to support our patients and donate more blood than ever before. Well, you've done it again, and then some! In 2014 with many new donors, and returning partners hosting blood drives, we have had a record year! 1346 units of blood, collected in the Greater Tehachapi Area, have gone out to our local hospitals and touched the lives of Kern County patients and...
As part of The Loop newspaper’s continuing Artist Series we feature oil artist Vicki Braslow. What inspires you to paint? Vicki: How can you not be inspired when you live here in Tehachapi. Natural beauty is everywhere here in the mountains. Do you paint ‘plein air’ (painting outdoors) or work from photos? Vicki: At one time I did a little plein air, but I found I like to take my time, work a little slower and a bit more presise. So, I work from photos that I have taken, or that my brother who is a professional photographer, might send me. W...
