Triassic Vineyards has won awards at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition every year since 2015 and this year was no exception. Vineyard owners Jim and Sally Arnold announced that Triassic brought home six awards from the 2020 competition that was held in early January. Their 2016 Big Bang, a red blend with Zinfandel as the lead grape, brought home Triassic's first Best of Class award, being number one out of 44 award winners in that class. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition...
Three winter stories could not be more different. I suppose just as each winter, year by year, is not the same. Components can be similar. Cold temperatures, rains and snows. Winds. But one year might have mightier winds and the next frigid deep snow. Such are these winter stories. Two have religious aspects, two have mysticism. All three deal with medical concerns. People are lost and some are found, and some people find themselves in the process. The first book, “Winter’s Secrets” by Lyn C...
Small footsteps crunch on the surface of the snow. The young face looks up at the house, and a little hand reaches skyward. A larger hand stretches towards the eaves, breaks off a thin tapering spike of ice and gives it to the smiling child, who promptly starts eating it. Our affection for icicles starts at an early age. Icicles, nature's water-flavored popsicles, are actually quite rare in natural world, but are common among human habitation in colder climates. Icicles typically form on steep...
When I was around 11 years old a lady moved in next door to us. I became friends with her oldest daughter, who was my age. When Christmas got close we found out they weren't going to get a tree. A single mother with three kids, times were hard. Daddy went out and bought presents for all of them. He even bought a record player for them so the mom would get something that she could enjoy. On Christmas Eve Thrifty would sell all their display artificial trees, fully decorated, for around $5.00. Lat...
There's a group of regulars who come into Kelcy's twice a day at about 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. I call them the "Board of Directors." It started with Boyd Lehman and Harold Rouse in 1961 or 1962, when it was still Trusty's Cafe. Then they started bringing in Chet Gilbertson, who owned The Rock Shop on Tehachapi Boulevard. Over cups of coffee, they'd discuss Tehachapi history, politics, their families and news of the day. And the group grew over the years. It's good to see them all. They're good friends...
At about 10 a.m. on April 13, 1992, a backhoe operator working on the City of Tehachapi's new sewer line on Dennison Road accidently tore through a telephone trunk line, cutting phone service for every single resident of the Ashe Village (formerly known as Ashe Tract) neighborhood north of the railroad tracks. Pacific Bell construction splicers Lonnie Latham, Mike Mattucci, Charlie Lunn and Jimmy Womack were dispatched to fix the massive problem, and arrived at the site at about noon to...

The full impact and force of the California government's climate change directives burst forth on Jan. 14 at the Kern County Supervisors meeting, as hundreds of people overflowed the chamber to protest new state initiatives that are key ingredients in the long march toward shutting down of the oil industry. The initiatives, which include a moratorium on various drilling permits, have hit Kern County hard, creating a climate of uncertainty, a drop in investment and confusion in the production pip...
On Jan. 14, the Board of Supervisors held a hearing in response to my referral on Governor Newsom's attack on Kern County's oil and gas industry. In attendance from Newsom's administration were Legislative Affairs Secretary Anthony Williams, CalGEM Oil and Gas Supervisor Uduak-Joe Ntuk and Department of Conservation Director David Shabazian. In California, 366,000 jobs supported by the oil and gas industry are in jeopardy, as well as $21.6 billion in annual local, state and federal tax revenue...
I love books. I will read an entire book because I like the way the cover fits in my hands or because its cover has a specific texture. Walking into libraries and used books stores has always made me happy just because of the smell and feel of the books. That being said, I love eBooks! There is something wonderful about knowing that if I finish the second book in a series at 1 a.m., I can instantly download the third one without having to wait! I also love audio books. Who doesn't like having so...

It was my intention to be back with the Herb Snips column this month but life circumstances have changed that. We will sell our home and move closer to family. We will miss our dear friends and the amazing sense of community here in Tehachapi. There will be no replacing our wonder-filled home with its oaks hanging over the spacious deck...

There are complex rules to determine qualification for the deduction. Moats & Hebebrand CPAs are here to help. Foreign Bank Account Traps If yo...

Prior to Rio Tinto, Julia had been working for the California High Speed Rail, first in...

A special election was not an option due to the November election when that seat will change from at-large to district.
