  • Love is so many things

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Feb 3, 2024

Valentine's Day, a day to celebrate love, is coming right up. And we all know what love is, don't we? Or do we? It's hard to define, for one thing. Love is something easier to describe than define, actually, although poets have been trying to do it for years. Some of them have done a pretty good job of it, too. "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...." thanks to Ms. Edna St. Vincent Millay, or Shakespeare's "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" For most of us, whether we're poets or...

Fans of disaster movies or actor Jeff Goldblum may recall the iconic 1996 alien invasion film "Independence Day," which featured a pivotal scene where protagonist David Levinson, a cable company technician with a M.I.T. education, portrayed by Goldblum, utilizes an amateur, or ham radio, to contact his father with critical information about the invasion. Together they use ham radio to relay the information on an open broadcast to any who may be listening. While disaster films and zombie shows...

  • Black History Month

    Lily La B, contributing writer|Feb 3, 2024

Last month I wrote about three instruments, the kazoo, armonica and banjo. The banjo was brought to America by slaves and had a strong influence on American music over the years. Given that February is Black History Month, I thought it would be interesting to continue the music theme focusing on African slave music and how it laid the foundation for most American music, especially blues, gospel and jazz. By 1860, there were roughly four million slaves in America. They brought with them a rich...
