  • Exceeding your budget

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Feb 6, 2016

There’s a popular television show depicting the home buying process, where we get to watch home buyers look at different properties with their Realtor. There’s plenty of conversation about “fixer uppers” and “turn key” properties and the pros and cons of each. One of the issues that comes up is about exceeding the buyer’s budget. What would that look like in real life? On TV many families are shopping for homes in excess of $400,000, but for our area let’s use a $250,000 budget. We’re assuming...

She said that she wanted to be here for last year’s Mountain Festival and managed the move about one week before the festivities. Joan was born in Trona, California, a little town of aro...

  • Threats, protection, and useful sites

    Greg Cunningham|Feb 6, 2016

We know that we need to protect our computers from the “bad guys”, but who are they and what do they do? Malware is short for malicious software. Malware refers to any computer program that is designed to do things that are harmful to or unwanted by the computer’s user. Computer viruses, worms, and spyware are examples of malware. Viruses are computer code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data. Worms are self-re...

  • 'Be with those who help your being'

    Rev Nancy Bacon|Feb 6, 2016

“Be with those who help your being.” Rumi gave the world a lot of good one liners, but this is one of my favorites. Those who help my being are often people I admire. They tend to be loving, caring, optimistic, ethical, peaceful folks I want to be around and who I wish to be like. Sometimes those who help my being are a bit more tricky. They appear different from me, disagreeing with me, and challenging me to grow by seeing life through their eyes. Comfort and challenge are needed for ong...

  • What you need to know about tax identity theft

    Matthew Rice|Feb 6, 2016

Tax Identity Theft is a growing problem. The General Accountability Office (GAO) reported that in 2013 the IRS paid out approximately $5.8 billion to thieves. They admit that the real number may be much higher because they are not sure how much theft goes undetected. The GAO is also reporting that they expect the fraudulent losses to continue to climb due to the way that information is received and processed by the IRS. One estimate is as high as $21 billion per year. The losses are staggering and they affect all of us directly or indirectly....

  • Frisky fitness

Liz R. Kover, Animal Assisted Activities Director Marleys Mutts Dog Rescue|Feb 6, 2016

When a kid hears a parent say, "Walk the dog", I imagine he sees a looming item on a dreaded to-do list; it just sounds like a chore. To the contrary, when kids learn young, the intrinsic value of taking a routine walk alongside their best four-legged friend, they're more likely to carry the practice into adulthood as a chosen activity. While at first walking the dog may seem like an obligation that cuts into web-surfing or video game-playing time, at some point the feel-good aspect of the...

  • Dig a square hole when planting

    Feb 6, 2016

When planting a tree, shrub, perennial, bulb or bedding plant, always dig a square hole. (Everyone calls me a square when I tell them that!) Also, dig a hole about two feet deep or as deep as it takes to break through any decomposed granite (dg) or hard pan soil. These days, a plant is almost always grown in a round pot. So if you plant it in a round hole, what will happen? Of course, it will grow in the direction of the roots. It is like putting the plant in a bigger round container where it ca...

  • Forde Shorts

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 114|Feb 6, 2016

Wait, what? – February blew in with a snowstorm that closed Hwy. 58, and Post Office patrons met with puzzlement when they found that the counter was closed on Feb. 1 (see sign). Postal customers accepted the closure with good grace. The most common utterance (detected as Forde Files stuck 65 Save Mart-purchased stamps on a batch of mail) was "What happened to 'Through rain and sleet...?'" According to Wikipedia, the phrase is not an official Post Office motto. It is an inscription on a post o...
