  • Welcome home Brandon Matchett

    Feb 18, 2017

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon a caravan of motorcycles and cars headed toward Bear Valley Springs. This was the beginning of a "Welcome Home" for US Army Specialist Brandon Matchett. He had just returned home from South Korea where he had been stationed for about a year and a half. Matchett is a 2010 graduate of Tehachapi High School, and joined the US Army in 2014. The Patriot Guard Riders, pictured left, met Brandon and his family in downtown Tehachapi and escorted them to his parents' home in...

  • Keep comparing!

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Feb 18, 2017

Twice this week my local quote was beat an online/mail lender. Once was for a reverse mortgage, and once for a plain refinance. Be sure you are talking to a local mortgage advisor before you latch on to a solicitation for your home loan business. In both cases mentioned, the structure offered was of much greater benefit to the bank than it was to my clients. For the reverse mortgage, the mailed plan offer was at a low up-front cost and a full draw of the available benefit. It looked great if...

  • Are you eligible for these tax deductions?

    D. David Hebebrand, CPA|Feb 18, 2017

Proving tax deductions without cancelled checks There is a growing trend toward remote deposit of checks. Because of the increasing sophistication of smartphones, you can now photograph a check written out to you and digitally send it to your bank for deposit. All this and more became possible after the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check 21) became effective in 2004. As a result of this act most banks discontinued the practice of retaining a paper version or copy of your checks....

  • Antibiotics don't work for cold and flu symptoms

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Feb 18, 2017

However many doctors still prescribe them: According to a recent study published by the British Medical Journal Lancet, about a third of the patients who go to their doctor for upper respiratory tract infections are diagnosed with acute rhinosinusitis (cold), and 80% of those patients receive antibiotics, even though doctors don’t have a clear distinction between a viral or a bacterial infection. Why is this, an important distinction? It’s important because while bacterial infections can be tre...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Feb 18, 2017

Kay Ford and her husband lived in California City for almost 50 years. They raised a family there. However, it was when she was finally there alone at the end of last year, that her grandson, Josh, and his wife, DeVerie, asked her if she would move to Tehachapi to be closer to them. She always found Tehachapi to be a very unique place so she said, “Find me a place and I’ll be there.” It took them a couple of months to find the right house and Kay made the move to Tehachapi in January, altho...

  • Are you relying on the wrong advice?

    Jay Thompson|Feb 18, 2017

Most small business owners are hard-working individuals that are so busy trying to make a living that they don’t have time for the seemingly unnecessary peripheral issues. They often leave issues of great financial importance up to others, and this could prove to be a grave mistake. One of those issues is investment and retirement account advice. For years there has been a lack of transparency in the financial services industry, and if the Department of Labor has its way, this is all going to ch...

  • An update on Fred

    Liz R. Kover, Liz R. Kover|Feb 18, 2017

First of all, I can hardly deal with how precious Fred's face is in this picture; the sweetness is almost too much to bear. Even better is what the image represents, which is a relaxed, calm, and happy working dog, chilling out and listening to a young friend read him a story at Marley's Mutts and Beale Library's bi-monthly Barks & Books session. Why is this so significant? Well, some of you have followed Fred since he was a wee pup; and watched as he went away to serve a child with autism for...

  • Me and the Mule

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Feb 18, 2017

I was searching through my mother Marion Deaver’s files, trying to find something to write about. Those of you who read my column know the drill – I dig, I find a nugget, and I get on with writing about my mother’s writings. But I have to tell you the pickings are starting to get slim. I still have a load of files about Tropico Gold Mine and the Kern-Antelope Historical Society, but I try to vary the articles and locations that I choose to write about. I went through some of the histo...

  • Let there be light

    Pat Gracey|Feb 18, 2017

There was a question asked of me, recently, during one of our First Friday evenings at the local Museum. The question: "When did Tehachapi first install electric lights?" The answer, of course, is 1915. I didn't elaborate as the conversation turned in another direction. The best part was not given and the person who inquired left with only the date and no more interesting facts. I was given that information from Grace Errea, herself, who had lived in the Errea House with her parents and...

  • Who to be?

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Feb 18, 2017

I am dealing with a change in my life. My home office is moving. I’m going to be changing from a small room to a larger room. Now normally that wouldn’t sound like anything that requires downsizing, but it does give me a chance to examine what I think I am. I’m going to end up with about the same amount of shelf space, but now all in one room. So in theory I could take everything that I currently have and I’d be OK. But do I really need all that? Much of my income comes from being a “statis...

  • Marching all my life (part 2)

    Mel White|Feb 18, 2017

I've been marching all my life, in one way or another; I've been to many types of rallies, protests and marches over the last 50 years, and while I am still active in many ways -- advocating for a more just and equitable world for everyone -- I kinda thought my actual "marching" days were over. Then came the recent Women's March on Washington on January 21 and I wanted to be there. Ultimately, I became part of the "Women's March – Los Angeles - Tehachapi Squad" (started on facebook by a c...

  • Is your computer slowing down? Here's how to fix it

    Greg Cunningham|Feb 18, 2017

Even the fastest computer can slow down as time goes by. Here are a few things you can do to make it run like new again. Watch out for programs that auto-start Some programs want to start up every time you boot your computer and get loaded into RAM to be ready to go. Unless it's a program you run every time you use your computer; this slows down your computer's boot time. To see what starts up when your Windows computer boots up, right-click a blank spot on the taskbar and launch Task Manager...

  • School law

    Phyllis Belcher|Feb 18, 2017

Dr. Marian Stephens spoke to American Association of University Women at the February meeting about her experiences as a consultant to attorneys on cases concerning education. She said that attorneys certainly know the law, but they are not as familiar with the Education Code as she is. With 45 years of experience in the field of education, she is knowledgeable about school policy and administration of the Code. Stephens did not seek this work, but it developed when an attorney contacted her...

  • Mission of Respect

    Judy Campanaro|Feb 18, 2017

Serving as an auxiliary to the Navy during World War II, the Merchant Marines were the supply line that provided everything Allied armies needed in order to survive and fight on foreign battlefields. Working through Nazi U-boat infested waters, they pulled the most dangerous duty during that war. Casualty rates were dramatically higher than in any formal branch of the military, yet it wasn't until the Reagan era that veterans' status and benefits were awarded these brave men. Recently Tehachapi...

  • Christian counseling versus other forms of counseling part 1

    Kevin Belsby, LMFT 32075|Feb 18, 2017

At the DPER Life Center we are often asked about the different types of counseling we offer. Primarily we are a Christian Counseling Center that offers specific Christian “based” licensed marriage and family counseling and “Christian Life Coaching” for those in the faith community. However, we also offer licensed marriage and family counseling for those who do not necessarily consider themselves Christians or members of any type of religious grouping. In essence then, we offer licensed counsel...

  • Social Security: What should you do at age 62? – Part 2

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Feb 18, 2017

How much income will you need? Another important piece of the puzzle is to look at how much retirement income you’ll need, based partly on an estimate of your retirement expenses. If there is a large gap between your projected expenses and your anticipated income, waiting a few years to retire and start collecting Social Security benefits may improve your financial outlook. If you continue to work and wait until your full retirement age to start collecting benefits, your Social Security m...

  • Clyde Cessna's 195 Skymaster

    Cathy Hansen|Feb 18, 2017

I love the lines and sound of a Cessna 195! Our friends, James 'JB' Brown, (former Lockheed test pilot and this month's speaker at Plane Crazy Saturday!) and Jere Calef and his wife, Heather Benes have beautiful examples of the Cessna Airmaster! The Cessna Airmaster is the plane that rescued the Cessna Aircraft Company from oblivion in the 1930s. Clyde Cessna helped create the General Aviation industry without a pilot's license and only a fifth grade education. Born in Iowa in 1879, he grew up...

  • A call for Hadacol

    Bill Mead, Columnist Emeritus|Feb 18, 2017

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission Not long ago I got to thinking about a patent medicine called Hadacol that I'm told has been off the market for a long time. I mentioned it to a friend and she said that when she was a young woman her middle-aged parents started taking Hadacol and soon presented her with a baby sister. Why would they quit selling something that magical? As I remember, Hadacol was an invention of a master showman who called himself Judge...

  • Fiddlers Crossing befriends 'West My Friend'

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Feb 18, 2017

The Fiddlers Crossing poster for West My Friend reads: "Canadian eclectic acoustic ensemble." The quartet of young and accomplished musicians from Vancouver Island has also been called an "Indie folk pop band," or simply "Indie roots." Other music reviewers have called the band, "Third-wave indie rock pop with four-part harmonies," and their style, "Cascadian third-wave indie progressive chamber folk-roots music." Obviously, West My Friend defies being pigeon-holed into any one genre. Their blen...

  • Cowgirl Balladeer Juni Fisher rides into Fiddlers Crossing, March 3

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Feb 18, 2017

Juni Fisher is no stranger to these parts. She has already given four sold-out concerts in Fiddlers Crossing and will ride into town March 3 for her fifth appearance. Fisher is the real deal – a Western singer who actually IS a cowgirl. Many of her songs are about women rodeo riders of bygone days, and she can be funny and poignant at the same time. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez a...

  • Fundraising at its best!

    Judith Campanaro|Feb 18, 2017

For the past several weeks with the help of funding for supplies from the Arts Council of Kern, long-term care residents at the Adventist Health Medical Center have been busy painting. Recently they put their creative endeavors to work and created a line of greeting cards to be used as a fundraiser. Activities director Zoila Schrader said, "The residents love feeling part of something. Those who donated their pictures are so excited others will see their work. They love the recognition and feel...
