  • Watching a dream take shape at Mountain Top Storage

    Clare Scotti, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

Lyndee Richmond sat with her 92-year-old father, Ken Hensler, watching enormous machines moving earth and placing cinder blocks at the construction site on Tehachapi Blvd. Neither one of them could believe that they were watching – after years of anticipation, dreaming and planning, their storage unit project was finally taking shape. It wouldn't be long before customers were filling the new, state-of-the-art units at Mountain Top Storage with valuables. In 2003, Lyndee and her husband, Scott R...

  • How savers and spenders can meet in the middle

    Lance Patton, Financial Advisor|Mar 2, 2024

Couples who have opposite philosophies regarding saving and spending often have trouble finding common ground, and money arguments frequently erupt. But you can learn to work with - and even appreciate - your financial differences. Money habits run deep If you're a saver, you prioritize having money in the bank and investing in your future. You probably hate credit card debt and spend money cautiously. Your spender spouse may seem impulsive, prompting you to think, "Don't you care about our...

  • The seldom seen: Ensatina salamanders

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

On a misty Tehachapi night, following rain earlier in the day, a small creature emerges from a hiding spot beneath a large toppled bark section, which is lying half-buried in leaf litter beside a fallen tree trunk. The little amphibian surveys its damp surroundings, as water droplets cling to the green grass. A Tehachapi Mountains native, it has large dark eyes, a mouth that seems slightly upturned in a pleasant grin, and appears to be wearing a tiny full body wetsuit decorated with splotches...

  • Rosemary is storied herb that you and your garden will love

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

Rosemary is an attractive, hardy little shrub that many people associate with the Simon and Garfunkel hit song Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. This plant thrives in the Tehachapi Mountains and is a great choice to have somewhere in your garden for a number of reasons: it is evergreen, cold hardy, drought-tolerant and useful as a fragrant herb. The name "Rosemary" itself is rich with different significant meanings. The word originally comes from "ros" which is the Latin word for "dew," and...

  • Just the facts

    Family Life Pregnancy Center|Mar 2, 2024

Our policy at the Family Life Pregnancy Center is to give facts, not opinions. Many of our clients face difficult decisions that come with consequences, good and bad. Knowledge is the key to any "fork in the road" that requires a level head of thinking. When facts are presented, it is up to the one seeking the information to interpret the facts and go forward with his or her decision. We rest on the fact that we give current and accurate information, with respect to the person no matter the...

  • Garden Club hosts reptile enthusiast

    Jessica DeMumbrum, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

The Desert Rose Garden Club of California City hosted a very interesting speaker to their February club meeting. Greg Watson, from Ridgecrest, has been a reptile enthusiast his entire life and has a vast knowledge of many desert critters. He provided an excellent Power Point presentation of all of the desert life he has personally photographed. Each photo held a story of the reptiles he has observed, and sometimes caught. Being bitten by a Sidewinder Rattlesnake did not sway his interest in sear...

  • What do you know about stem cells?

    Claudia Baker, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

I have one very important question for you. What do you know about stem cells? I didn’t understand how important they are in the overall healing process until a friend asked me this very same question. The only thing I had heard about stem cells was that they work miracles in our bodies, but are so expensive that the average person can’t afford them. Did you know that by age 30, 50% of your own once healthy stem cells are dormant or inactive and by the time you are age 60 that number is reduced to only 10% healthy cells? These cells are des...

  • What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

We have definitely been in the rainy season. All’s good, though, as we should have a very vibrant spring. The valley has recently lost one of our community citizens. Miles Coverdale passed on Jan. 27. He was known for his years of weed-whacking roadsides, and also for his videos of our valley, covering the amenities, and, even more significantly, our fragile water delivery system. Kudos to CSD Vice-President, Martin Hernandez and the Board. VP Hernandez introduced a proclamation requesting that Bear Valley Springs be designated a Purple H...

  • You can make a difference!

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

Giving back, it’s almost become a generic term, and it’s meaning is probably different for each one of us. For me it meant taking the opportunities I had, finding areas that were important to me and trying to make a difference in my communities. First, you must find your passions. If you’re going to make a difference you need to know what drives you, and where you can make a difference in something that is important to you. For me it was always veterans and kids. I knew for me to give back,...

Also being added in 2024 is a 64 gallon greenwaste container with a monthly rate of $11.14 residential and $19.55 commercial. Torres reported...

  • Thank you, Tehachapi

    Stanley Morgan, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

I’m Stanley Morgan. My wife, Linda, and I lost our daughter on Feb. 5, due to complications from a brain bleed. Over the last 8 years she had significant health issues and had been on hospice for 2 years. That having been said, nothing really prepares one for the loss of a child, regardless of what age they may be. Upon her passing we told a few people who we felt had a need/desire to know about her death and word quickly spread. I am writing this to express our heartfelt thank you to the Tehachapi community for the incredible support and c...

  • National Pi Day, March 14

    Lily La B, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

Thirty-seven years ago, no one had heard of Pi Day. Then along came Larry Shaw (1939-2017), a physicist at the San Francisco Exploratorium. In 1988, three years after the death of the Exploratorium founder, the staff gathered at a retreat in Monterey, California to soul search and brainstorm. It was there that Shaw linked March 14 (3.14) with the digits of pi (3.14159...) and saw it as an opportunity to bring Exploratorium staff together for some fun, camaraderie and pie. Pi Day was born. What s...

  • It takes a heap o' livin'

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

In 1933, during one of the worst periods of the great depression, my parents found themselves lacking money to continue paying rent on a small house on K Street in Mojave. In the attitude of “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade,” they decided to build a house. It was easier in those days before building permits, regulations and inspections were required. My father, Chauncey Davis, traded local businessman Cy Townsend a piece of mining property for a vacant lot in town – just across the s...

  • Council pledges support for Honor Flight

    Pat Doody, staff writer|Mar 2, 2024

Vietnam veteran Steve Miles and American Legion Post 221 Commander Lynn Eckert attended the Feb. 20 City Council meeting with a request that the City of Tehachapi approve one $1,500 sponsorship for a veteran to make an Honor Flight trip. Miles and Eckert related stories of their time in Vietnam and a reception on their return where they were afraid to let people know they had served. By the end of their presentation, the pair, as well as the council members and the audience, were in tears. City...

  • Bakersfield Museum of Art

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Mar 2, 2024

Seems to be the rainy season lately in our area, which means 'tis the season to do indoor things. So, one cloudy, cold, and wet day recently friend Leila and I decided to go down the hill to check out the current displays at the Bakersfield Museum of Art. It was well worth the trip as the exhibitions there are unique and varied, and thought-provoking. By the way, the drive down there was especially gorgeous with all the hills turning a vibrant green, thanks to all the rain, and it was sunny in...

  • Dogs, bears and meerkats

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Mar 2, 2024

What do dogs, bears and meerkats have in common? Well, usually not that much, but in this review they all are surrounded by mystery and murder. Three authors have woven stories around these animals, and it may be hard to recognize the leading characters, because as you know, children and animals tend to steal the show. I enjoyed sharing a dog's point of view along with runaway Chase Ryder and grieving veterinarian Sully, in "Wanted." In this first book by K.J. Corgan of the Chase Ryder series,...
