  • Looking to improve your posture?

    Kevin Brown, DC|Mar 5, 2022

Great! Keep reading... Let's face it, "good posture" is something we all strive for, but it's hard when routine activities throughout everyday life can put a strain on our posture. Things such as stress caused by working from home, fatigued muscles form the latest DIY project, the hours spent sitting slouched over gaming with the squad, and even our shoes, impact our body's ability to achieve and maintain good posture. In fact, they actively work against this goal. To maintain good posture, you...

  • Smoothing market ups and downs

    Lance Patton, Financial Advisor|Mar 5, 2022

After the wild ride of 2020, the U.S. stock market was relatively calm in 2021, but there was still plenty of volatility. There were 55 days when the S&P 500 index - generally considered representative of U.S. stocks - closed with a rise or fall of 1% or more from the previous day's closing price. And there were seven days with a change of more than 2%.1 The good news for investors is that the trend was generally upward, and the S&P 500 ended the year up almost 27%.2 But no matter which way the...

  • Lawmakers ask for more money to protect public safety

    Vince Fong, Assemblyman|Mar 5, 2022

In their bipartisan effort to curb dangerous street racing and sideshows, Assemblymembers Vince Fong (R-Kern County) and Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove) requested $5.5 million for the California Highway Patrol to enforce illegal sideshow activities. "Too many lives have been harmed by illegal sideshows," said Assemblyman Fong, who authored Assembly Bill 3 last year to allow judges to suspense the driver's license of people convicted of engaging in sideshows. "These reckless activities draw crowds that...

  • Is it time to ditch free email?

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Mar 5, 2022

Billions of people have email addresses ending in Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL or one of the many others. These email addresses are easy to get and easy to remember. Moreover, those email providers do a reasonably respectable job securing your email, offering industry-standard security like two-factor authentication and encrypting the connection between your computer and their server. So, why would you want to switch to something else? Privacy. You know those big multinational...

After a couple of days of strong winds, rain and blowing snow, Thursday, Feb. 24 was clear, calm and cold. The perfect flight test weather greeted everyone on the ground and at altitude for the important full retraction of all landing gear on Stratolaunch carrier aircraft, the largest aircraft by wingspan in the world – 385-feet. • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Mar 5, 2022

In early November 2021 Catherine and Tom Carr moved from Big Pine, California to Tehachapi. It was Catherine's work that brought them here. Catherine is the East Kern Regional Planner for District 9 of CalTrans (California Department of Transportation) and Tehachapi is in District 9. The Carrs had lived in Big Pine for two and a half years. Tom's word for their stay there was "brutal." He said it was 100 miles to the closest Walmart which also made it a six-hour round trip. However, that is not...

  • Wells bells

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Mar 5, 2022

I was fortunate to be able to grow up, during most of my childhood, in the same town with long-time friends. These are people about whom we can say, "we go back a long way." My children, as children of a military man, had to make adjustments when we would change duty stations. They would exchange letters with their left-behind friends and then the friendships would fade. One thing about military children is, they learn to make friends easily. In 1936, a new Tehachapi grammar school was...

  • Love those Irish limericks

    Mel White, contributing writer|Mar 5, 2022

St. Patrick's Day is coming up, and I can't help but celebrate it here in my column. I have a bit o' the Irish blood coursing through my veins, but that is really neither here nor there as everyone is a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day. And why not? If this is a holiday that brings us closer to a feeling of togetherness and camaraderie through green colored celebrations, adopted heritage, and happy words, then I say Faith and Begorrah, let the celebrating begin! And we certainly do need that...

  • Track maintenance

    Ed Gordon, contributing writer|Mar 5, 2022

It's that time of year. Every year during February and March the railroad performs maintenance of the tracks in the Tehachapi pass. Railroad maintenance-of-way has long been an important part of railroading. Parked on the tracks, across from the truck stops, was a row of gondolas, open-topped rail cars with low sidewalls, making them ideal for higher-density bulk cargo. Unlike open-topped hoppers, gondolas have no side or bottom release doors and thus cargo must be manually unloaded from the top...

  • Fossil Discovery Center

    Mark Fisher, contributing writer|Mar 5, 2022

Recently we visited the Fossil Discovery Center in Fairmead, up in Madera County. This is a small facility outside Chowchilla which showcases the prehistoric life that once flourished here in what is now California. There were fossil exhibits (reconstructions) of smilodon (saber-toothed cats), dire wolves, ground sloths and a huge mammoth. There are other exhibits for smaller animals too, plus some exhibits on the Native American culture of the area. In addition, there is an area for children...

  • 2022 Calgonquin 25K/50K goes virtual

    Jason Swanson, Co-Race Director|Mar 5, 2022

Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold the Calgonquin 25K/50K on the Lehigh Trails in Tehachapi in 2022. The land changed ownership last year and our many efforts to secure permission from the landowners for the event have been unsuccessful. This deeply saddens us as we’ve put in countless hours of preparation for a successful event in Tehachapi. Once it appeared unlikely that the original trails would be an option, we started looking for an alternate location that was close to Tehachapi with similar trails and, of course, lots of vert a...

One Fourth of July we were sitting there watching the parade go by our old house on Tehachapi Boulevard, and there was actually snow in the air. Bobbi McCullough was the parade queen, and they were throwing bags of potato chips off the float because of all the potatoes that were grown in the area at that time. It was so cold! – Lydia Muro Wheat The Muro family lived in the house near the corner of Tehachapi Boulevard and Robinson Street, across the boulevard from Taco Samich. It is believed t...
