While it was a bummer that the Tehachapi Lady Warriors fell 41-37 to Monache in the CIF Division II girls' basketball finals in Fresno last month, the second time in as many years the Warriors have finished as the runner-up, one has to be proud of the effort that this team showcased, despite tough odds. I won't continue to lament the awful seeding process utilized by the CIF Central Section, because until athletic directors and school administrators speak up against the board of directors,...
California is experiencing a far wetter season than originally forecasted. As of the Tehachapi Cummings County Water District (TCCWD) board meeting on Feb. 21, Tehachapi had officially seen 85% of the total predicted rainfall for 2024. In February alone, the Tehachapi valley saw over 4.5 inches of rainfall, with over 8 inches of rain having fallen already this year. Reservoirs in the Central Valley and across California are reporting fuller than average levels, with an overflow of water at Lake...
In a world that seems to have gone mad, where everything costs more and you get less, where common decency seems to have gone missing, there is hope! This might not be life changing news for everyone but for some it can make a big difference. It's about your plumbing. Local plumbing shop, John the Plumber, has been looking for a way to give back to their customers and they believe they have found a perfect way to do that: with every service call, no matter how big or small, they will do a whole...

As many of us can attest, the Tehachapi Mountains can be a difficult place to get plants to thrive. It can be very cold in winter and spring, then warm up, and then get cold again. The summers can be long and hot. So what are often the best plants to grow here? California natives. Plants that are native to California are better adapted to our Mediterranean climate of cold, wet (hopefully) winters and dry summers with abundant sunshine. Gardeners tend to have better luck with native plants, and...
"Someday, I'm going to open a gift shop!" I would declare this each time I left a gift shop during retail therapy sessions with my friends. Fast forward to retirement in late 2019, after 20 years of teaching first, second and third graders only to be isolated by COVID-19. Although I had family close by, the pandemic made it difficult to cultivate new friendships and experience all that Tehachapi has to offer. Once the city began to reopen, an opportunity presented itself where my son's tour...
Spring is upon us, up here in Tehachapi - well it seems that way some days! With the abundance of moisture that we received this winter it is no surprise that here shortly we will be inundated with weeds. We are also well into 2024, which means that gas powered string trimmers are no longer going to be available. Rest assured here at Karl's Hardware we will still have your needs met. We are able to sell through our current product and boy do we have a substantial inventory to sell. We are also...
This is the question most asked when meeting with a potential borrower these days. The steady climb of mortgage rates over the last 3 years has made some borrowers hesitate to purchase, thinking rates will come back down into the 3% range or housing prices will crash. Many economists will agree that to see rates in the 3% range again, it would take a major economic event that we may not wish upon ourselves as rates tend to come down when there's negative economic news. While not a 100%...
This is a great question and one which I hear often. Families usually want to come in right away and prepare. My first response is ... stay home with your loved one. Time with your loved one is your most precious commodity. I have had instances where families were at the funeral home preparing and their loved one passed away while they were with me. This can be devastating. We can help you begin this difficult process at home and aid you in preparing for a meeting with an arrangement counselor after your loved one has passed. I advise that,...
One of your important sources of retirement income will likely be Social Security - but when should you start taking it? You can start collecting Social Security benefits at 62, but your checks will be considerably bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67. You could even wait until you're 70, at which point the payments will max out, except for yearly cost-of-living adjustments. But if you need the money, you need the money, even if you're just 62 or...

Larry Trapp served in Vietnam as an air traffic controller, and during breaks he had time to think. He thought about his high school years and how he enjoyed classes at Bakersfield High School. However, he admitted that he just got by in many of his classes. He did not take advantage of all that was available to him. He decided to make up for that wasted time and vowed to read more. When he was home on leave, he bought a big stack of books, which he took back to Vietnam. In his words, he became a “book junkie,” reading in every spare mom...
Arthur Ray Tipton, 80, passed away at his home on Thursday, Feb. 29. Art was born on Dec. 4, 1943 to Paul and Gladys Tipton in Napa, California. In October 1967, Art began working for CalPortland Cement and retired in 2003 as a Layout Welder. Art was an avid trap shooter and belonged to the Tehachapi Sportsman Club where he spent...
So, there you were reading your email, catching up on work or reading about family and friends. Then you saw something that piqued your interest. Something that said it was a spreadsheet, or a receipt or something similar. You click to open the file to see what it was and "BAM!" your computer got a virus that locked up your files. A pop-up message appeared that said you need to call to unlock your computer, as now it was infected with ransomware. The good news is that gone are the days of...
This special Seder celebration will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at Shepherd of the Hills Church, 24300 Bear Valley Springs Rd., next to the Cummings Valley School. There’s no charge for lunch. Consider joining us for this special worship service at 10:30 a.m. If you have ever wondered what was the last meal Christ ate with His disciples, before His crucifixion and resurrection, this is the Seder. A Seder meal is in specific order because it tells a story. The Passover Seder tells the story at how God brought the Israelites out of E...
Our valley has lost two noteworthy members in the past few weeks. Eldon (Don) Kordes was well-known as a member of the CSD Board for a few years. He was also very talented as a woodcarver and donated pieces to the Tehachapi Heritage Museum. As a veteran, he will be interred at Bakersfield National Cemetery on April 3 at 10:45 a.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Tehachapi Heritage Museum at noon that day. Meanwhile, his carvings will be on display through the month of March at the museum. James Phillips Carmichael has also been lost...
Did you know that California is the largest producer of citrus in the country? California supplies more than 80% of the fresh citrus fruits consumed in the United States and exports citrus to 16 countries around the world. In January, you will find navel oranges, Cara Cara oranges, blood oranges and Minneola Tangelo. The beginning of California citrus varieties starts in late summer and will continue into the spring. With all that citrus, let's talk about marmalade! Did you see Paddington Bear...
As a business owner, do you mix personal transactions and business transactions? It is a common issue. One survey found that more than one-quarter of small businesses say they co-mingle finances. And it is easy to see why given the wide range of priorities a small business owner oversees every day, using a bank account that is already set up often seems like the easiest and most logical choice. But, while it might seem simpler to only manage one account, that is not actually the case. Here are...
Trusts have been used as an integral part of sophisticated tax and financial arrangements for centuries. Exactly how they are used depends on a person's particular goals, current tax rules, and other factors. Hopefully this article helps you to understand some ways a trust may help you. A trust is an arrangement in which title to property is held by someone for another's benefit. The trust can be established to benefit the person creating it (the grantor), or to benefit another (the...

Now sitting at a red light, you are likely to have an electric city bus, a Tesla and a couple of hybrid vehicles surrounding you. Part of the increased adoption of electric propulsion has come from EV car battery technology breakthroughs. Electric car battery technology has evolved rapidly in the past several years....
