Dorothy McReynolds, TCTs Chair of Publicity|Mar 18, 2017

When Christal Wheeler accepted her role as Director for TCT's upcoming "The Best of Broadway," it wasn't exactly according to plan. Christal's love for the arts began long before she moved from Bakersfield to a small California town in the northern Sierras called Susanville. It didn't take long for boredom to set in, so Christal began looking for an outlet that might fulfill that void. Christal was always attracted to the arts, particularly music, and when she discovered Susanville's "The Best...

  • Tire pressure monitoring system

    Protech Auto Service|Mar 18, 2017

All new cars and light trucks since 2008 have come equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, or ‘TPMS’. The TPMS system detects when a tire becomes under-inflated and lights up a warning light on the dash. So what’s the big deal? Well, under-inflated tires can be a real safety concern for everyone. First of all, they don’t handle properly and that can lead to an accident. Second, under-inflated tires can overheat and cause the tire to come apart, which can also lead to an accident. Government regulations requiring TPMS systems aim to...

  • Forde Shorts

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Mar 18, 2017

Another lake appears – Just as Surprise Lake in the lowlands of Bear Valley appears infrequently, a lake has arisen like Brigadoon in the lowlands of Sand Canyon (photo right). The lake is a catch basin built 50 years ago to irrigate potato crops at the bottom of the canyon. "That's the story I have heard, anyway," said Richard Cantrell of the Quail Valley Water District, which does not own the property or the lake. The lake got so high in the usually dry basin this year that water flowed o...

He was moving away to be closer to family and to participate in a new adventure, a research program to fight his battle with Parkinson's disease. What a distinct honor to shake hands with one of America's heroes from World War II history. Al took a picture of me with Charlie Hudson. Charl...

  • Unguarded motorcycle

    Mel White|Mar 18, 2017

I’m just as quick as anyone else to whine “why me?” when something goes wrong through no fault of my own, and I can be just as slow as anyone else to realize when I just plain luck out in spite of myself. Today I’m remembering one of those latter times: Lucking out I was on my first solo cross-country motorcycle trip, summer, 1986 — San Francisco to Denver and back again — and I was having the time of my life. My schedule allowed me to take my time and see the sights, and one of the sights I wan...

  • Tehachapi's legendary resident Dick Baxter

    Pat Doody|Mar 18, 2017

Tehachapi resident and famed Hollywood manager Dick Baxter has a reason to be proud of his career in show business. Not many people can say that they have put in 54 years, but Baxter has. The farm boy from Shelbyville, Indiana started Dick Baxter Management in 1963 and has never looked back. Born on a 40 acre farm near Shelbyville, Baxter grew up like most kids working on the farm and going to school. He was on the school track team but his real interest was in the field of entertainment. Even...

  • 'Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night'

    Pat Gracey|Mar 18, 2017

I travel to the Post Office mostly every day as I rent a box there. I am always greeted by wonderfully kind and courteous employees. If you are a “regular”, you are welcomed and called by name. Until 1958 all Tehachapi residents had to call for their mail. No door to door mail delivery in the small town. It was a place to meet one’s neighbors and the town’s businessmen would greet one another and usually end up having coffee at a local restaurant. My husband and I happened to be visitin...
