Sixteen years ago, my husband Al and his son Dor helped set up a UH-1B "Huey" for a Vietnam Veteran Memorial at Tehachapi Airport. The UH-1 helicopter was the "icon" of Vietnam. All veterans of Vietnam know the image and the familiar sound of the Huey. The plaque says it all: "This Vietnam War 'Huey' Helicopter is a symbol dedicated to honor all the brave men and women who courageously fought the tyranny and oppression in Vietnam. May their courage and heroic efforts – for which many lost their...

  • Life during the continued pandemic

    Steve White, contributing writer|Mar 27, 2021

Now that Spring 2021 is well on its way, there is "Spring in the Air." Other than the excitement of getting both COVID vaccinations, life is continuing pretty much very quiet and ho-hum for Pepe and me. Of course it will be a few weeks before the vaccination is fully effective. Then there's the possibility of my falling into the small percentage that is not protected by vaccination. The high percentage of COVID-19 positives that still show up every day, combined with the variant changes of the o...

My husband, Terry Brady, and I moved to Tehachapi in 2006. In 2008 we met Rene Champagne who had been a teacher at Wayside Elementary in Bakersfield for the previous 20 years. It turns out she was teaching not only at my elementary school but actually in my 5th grade classroom. Rene invited us to visit her and her students at my old classroom whenever we would like. We did just that and became acquainted with her students. I told the students I had been in that classroom when I was their age,...

  • Same time this year

    Diana Frieling, contributing writer|Mar 27, 2021

Every year at this time as we prepare to open the ranch, I look back at how far we have come. Our first opening was a two day experiment and we were stunned by the turnout. Volunteers got busy and built a picnic area. A playground was added and pens began to get facelifts. The ranch...
