  • Hoover Dam: Style, power, American spirit

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 92|Mar 28, 2015

Hoover Dam is 35 miles from Las Vegas and a world away in time and substance. The 726-foot (221 m) high dam, begun in 1931 and completed in 1935 during the depths of the Depression, is a monument to human ingenuity, engineering prowess, Art Deco style and teamwork. New structures – visitor accommodations and the soaring Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge that was built to divert Nevada-Arizona traffic from across the top of the dam – have added to the luster of the site as a magne...

  • Junk food

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Mar 28, 2015

The other day we were discussing “junk food”. Someone brought up how bad a peanut butter and jelly sandwich made on white bread was. Now, dietitians tend to see foods differently than most folks. Ask dietitians about “junk food” and most of us will agree on foods such as those with “empty calories” (think soda, candy, cookies, donuts and the like) and high fat fried foods (fast food hamburgers, French fries, commercial fried chicken, etc.). However, most dietitians say: “There are no bad foods; some are better for you than others, and i...

  • VA loans are good

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Mar 28, 2015

Why are realtors and sellers wary of buyers using a VA loan? They shouldn’t be. Let’s bust some myths about this great loan program. The VA home loan entitlement allows Veteran home buyers access to a loan program requiring no down payment. Way back in the day, VA loans had extra requirements about the condition of the property, and made the seller pay some of the buyer’s loan fees. Not any more. Myth: VA home loans require a 10% down payment. Truth: Veterans can apply for 100% financing for m...
