  • Wiley Post and his airplane Winnie Mae

    Cathy Hansen|Apr 1, 2017

My father, M. G. Hellwig, worked for TAT Airlines (Transcontinental Air Transport), predecessor to TWA (Trans World Airlines). TAT was an airline founded in 1928 by Clement Melville Keys. In 1930, TAT merged with Western Air Express to become TWA. My father often spoke of Wiley Post and the Lockheed Model 5C Vega called Winnie Mae that the famed aviator flew. A Vega painted like Winnie Mae used to be in the Tall-Manz Aviation Museum at Orange County Airport and I remember seeing slides that my...

    Amira Michael, Pharmacist|Apr 1, 2017

Itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, fatigue…. These are just a few of the signs of seasonal allergies—also known as hay fever.1 And get ready: It looks like we may have a real doozy of an allergy season this year.2 Milder winter temperatures in places can cause plants to pollinate early. And a rainier spring leads to quick plant growth, as well as an increase in mold.1 Allergic reactions mostly occur when your body responds to a “false alarm.” And, as you well know, there isn’t a cure for seaso...

  • Fourth of July free barbecue

    Pat Gracey|Apr 1, 2017

Some of my earlier memories from the 1930s was Tehachapi's 4th of July FREE Barbecue! It was taken for granted that everyone would be in the City Park and have a wonderful meal that included beef prepared in deep pit style cooking where the meat is slow cooked for 24 hours in an underground pit. Word spreads fast when the term "free" is included and people from near and far came; some as far as Los Angeles. Our small community, in the 1930s, had a population of a scant one thousand souls...

  • 2017: No foolin'

    Marilda Mel White|Apr 1, 2017

It's the first day of April and oh, how I love the first of April! And so far I am loving 2017! So many good things have been happening to me lately that I hardly know where to begin. I guess it all started last week when I went out to Sand Canyon for a little hiking and nature loving, and while I was there I managed to fall in a large sink-hole. I didn't break any bones, but I did break my camera so I have no pictures to show you, but let me tell you, it was a pretty fantastic experience. I...

Here we are firmly into spring with the promise of warmer and longer days. California is recovering from a long drought and many of the lakes are at full pool. The streams will be flowing with water from all the snow pack and mountains that are part of the greater water shed. We should be seeing running water for months. That brings an optimistic outlook for fishing throughout 2017. If you haven’t yet got your gear ready for a new season, its time to re-spool with fresh line, check the i...

  • Unique basils

    Edna McCallion|Apr 1, 2017

In September 2015 we covered several commonly grown basils. This time around we will talk about some new varieties of Ocimum Basilicum that have distinctive qualities. I hope this information will peak your interest to try at least one of these unique basils. I mentioned in the 2015 column that I was growing pesto perpetuo basil because it did not flower and was said to be rabbit and deer resistant. This means you do not have to pinch off flowers to keep ahead of the plant bolting to seed....
