  • Memorial welcomes cloth mask donations

    Apr 11, 2020

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Kern County and are now welcoming donations of cloth masks from our community. We have included instructions on how to make these masks on our website: www.dignityhealth.org/central-california/about-us/covid19-donations We’re so grateful for the cloth mask donations that have been dropped off to our...

  • Puns and giggles

    Mel White|Apr 11, 2020

These are trying times in which we find ourselves, and aside from bad news and the occasional moments of dread and terror, I'm heartened by the happy things I find online, and the happy and funny things that are being sent to me. It's good to laugh whenever possible in these dark days. So I've compiled a bunch of puns – one of my favorite forms of humor – to pass on some grins and giggles for you today. My favorites: My friend's answering machine says "Leave a brief message" so I said "fruit of...

  • Home from school series

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Apr 11, 2020

Home-schooling responsibilities came suddenly. Parents had to become teachers, utilizing friends’ suggestions, online sites and varied school packets. For me, this extra time is perfect for reading books, books and more books. Even if you have a large family library, no one can ever have too many book suggestions in my world. And starting a new series is always exciting, especially when you have extra time to fill. I was quite surprised to read on Twitter that many adults were reading Harry P...

  • Explore the world, play big while teaching at home

    Julianna Crisalli|Apr 11, 2020

I feel very lucky. Frustrated and scared, but lucky. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit our world hard, and the number of confirmed cases here in Kern County continues to grow. It's hard not knowing when it will ease, or when life will go back to something more familiar. But while the growing pains of this new life are uncomfortable, it is encouraging and comforting to see people using compassion to help their community. For me, working from home instead of the office isn't new. Throughout my...

    Adventist Health|Apr 11, 2020

With the spread of COVID-19, we’ve been hearing a lot about the need for “social distancing.” What does it mean to socially distance? And how will it impact you and your family? In California, individuals have been instructed to stay home except for essential needs. Be sure to check www.COVID19.CA.gov for more information about this executive order. Defining the distance Social distancing is exactly what it sounds like—keeping at a distance from others. The practice is an important infection prevention measure that involves intenti...

  • Country Oaks Baptist Church copes with COVID-19

    Apr 11, 2020

As Pastor Nathan Hiner of Country Oaks Baptist Church writes, “We as a church body have found ourselves in uncharted territory concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.” He calls upon his congregation to have faith, live wisely, live in submission to governing authorities as long as the State is not requiring citizens to do something God has forbidden or is forbidding something God has commanded, and consider greater opportunities to minister in the community. In compliance with the Governor’s orders, the Country Oaks Baptist Church office and campus a...

  • Keeping Catholics connected

    Apr 11, 2020

On March 25, the Most Reverend Joseph V. Brennan, D.D., bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, updated his March 18 decree of the mandated directives for members of the Catholic community to follow in the coming weeks. As he mentions, the pandemic landscape appears to change daily. The suspension of public Mass and all activities at all of the Diocese parishes will continue indefinitely for all parishioners, ministers and employees. The Bishop also strongly discourages congregating in vehicles for parking lot services. This clearly impacts Holy Week...

As we go through the Coronavirus crisis, we are all, first and foremost, concerned about the health of our loved ones and communities. But the economic implications of the virus have also weighed heavily on our minds. • Back up your computer while you're self-quarantining

    Greg Cunningham|Apr 11, 2020

Are you stuck at home? Now is the perfect time to revisit your data back-up strategy or, you know, to create a data back-up strategy in the first place. One back-up is better than nothing, but to keep your data safe, follow a 3-2-1 back-up plan. The old school style 3-2-1 back-up meant you'd keep three copies of your data in two different formats and one copy offsite. Here's how an old-school 3-2-1 might look. Buy an external hard drive and run the built-in back-up software on your computer and...

  • Test pilots – George Welch and Al Blackburn

    Cathy Hansen|Apr 11, 2020

I want to give recognition and great appreciation to George Welch, a U.S. Army Air Corps Second Lieutenant. You may not recognize his name, so I'll let you know some of his history. Born George Louis Schwartz, Jr., Welch's name was changed due to anti-German sentiments from World War I. His parents gave George and his brother their mother's maiden name of Welch but retained Schwartz as George's middle name. Welch received his wings and commission in January 1941 and was posted to the 47th...

  • Let the children play

    Pat Gracey|Apr 11, 2020

I just realized that this week was my deadline week for my column. With the "silent killer" flu lurking around my mind was elsewhere. I have found shopping online is quite interesting but I miss the satisfaction of the personal touch of tossing things in a shopping basket. I've been busy at home, however, praying and keeping track of friends and how they are doing. We stay cheerful and since we have no place to go or meetings to attend we have more time to stop and smell the flowers, so to...

  • County of Kern services during COVID-19 pandemic

    Zack Scrivner, Supervisor, District 2|Apr 11, 2020

My family and I are praying for health and comfort for our communities and our nation during this unprecedented time. As your Second District Kern County Supervisor, I want to assure...

  • Gathering in Kern County Parks discouraged during Easter weekend to reduce exposure to COVID-19

    Apr 11, 2020

The Kern County Public Health Services Department reminds Kern County residents that facilities and amenities, including restrooms, within all parks in Kern County and the City of Bakersfield will be closed Easter weekend and therefore we discourage the use of parks for Easter gatherings. Traditionally, these are two of the busiest days of the year for local parks and they attract large crowds of people gathering to celebrate the holiday. On March 16, the California Department of Public Health issued guidance requiring the cancelling of...

  • Dandelions: lighten up, they're more delicious than frustrating

    Jon Hammond|Apr 11, 2020

Our ongoing spring storms, and occasionally sunny days in between, have brought out those little yellow flowers that most lawn gardeners detest: dandelions. But I must confess that I am the exception – I like dandelions. And until fairly recently, so did most people. This incredibly widespread plant is native to Europe and Asia but is now naturalized throughout most of the temperate regions of the world, and is found from coast to coast in the U.S. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a l...

  • Ravens prefer blue eggs

Jon Hammond, Land of Four Seasons|Apr 11, 2020

I had an interesting experience observing a pair of ravens in my orchard. I had gathered some eggs from my chickens that were blue, white and brown. These were in equal numbers. I placed them in separate color groups out in our orchard. The ravens soon arrived. They at first started to jump around the eggs and flap their wings, acting all excited. I guess this was to see if the eggs were alive or where a threat to them somehow. Next they threw dirt at the eggs. Then they approached the eggs and...
