The old cowboy, these are not words that you would use to describe Brad Lundberg. Yes, he spent most of his life in the saddle. Yes, he has trained many young cowboys to cut and sort and rope cattle. But at almost 77 years old, he is as sharp and vital as a man 30 years his junior. Brad started out on a farm in Lompoc where his dad was raising bean crops and cows, doing day labor and teaching his young son how to handle and care for horses. Brad still wakes up every day and goes down to his...

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Lyme Disease is caused by a bacterial infection resulting from the bite of a tick that is very small and often escapes detection. While Lyme Disease can be overcome in its earlier stages, chronic Lyme Disease is not so easy a foe to beat. The bacterial organisms infest the brain of the afflicted and cause symptoms that have made Lyme Disease very hard to diagnose as these symptoms mimic those of Multiple Sclerosis and...
The setting was a memorial held for both Debbie Reynolds and Carrie at Los Angeles' Forest Lawn, March 25, 2017. Dwight, Debbie Reynolds' white Coton pup, snuggled in close between Leslie Reynolds and her dad, Bill. Forest Lawn's Hall of Liberty was being filled with family, friends and fans waiting for the memorial to begin. Pooch Dwight had his own front row seat as he and Leslie waited for Todd Fisher to present the lives of his famous mom and sister. "The first time I met Carrie" said...

Ten years ago I wrote a column about “slowing down but not stopping. ” In it I discussed the realization that while I couldn’t do some of the things I could do when I was younger – like stealing 2nd base or staying up all night without feeling sluggish the next day, or being able to read the directions on a pill bottle without glasses – I was still able to do a lot and I was not planning on stopping any time soon. I acknowledged then that a little creativity and desire goes a long way in figuri...
A group called the Global Burden of Disease Project 2010, and made up of a collaboration between the World Health Organization, the University of Queensland (Australia) School of Population Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the University of Tokyo and the Imperial College of London, clarified the worldwide health burden of musculoskeletal conditions and in particular, neck and back pain. Lower back pain was identified as the number one...
Do most of us look back at our experiences in middle school PE with fondness and pride? Or do we cringe, remembering all-too-painfully the emotional torture of being picked last for a team; or reliving the nearly-constant stitch in our sides from begrudgingly running that lonely, treacherous mile that seemed never to end? I, for one, associate that time in life with a kind of default state of adolescent discomfort. Body was awkward and changing; ego was fragile. Sense of self shaky at best, and...
There was an unusual addition to the regular service of worship at Tehachapi Community Congregational Church (UCC) last week. It was a Scottish tradition called Kirkin' 'o the Tartans. It dates back to the mid-eighteenth century when wearing of the tartan and playing of bagpipes was outlawed by the Hanovarian English government. On Sunday mornings, during the years when these bans were publicly enforced, Scotish people would secretly carry a small piece of their clan's tartan to church under...

Movies are the most influential communication medium today, and this young lady, because of her involvement, found a new direction and passion for life. Today just about all...

What is risk? In the investment world, risk means uncertainty. It refers to the possibility that you will lose your investment or that an investment will yield less than its anticipated return. Simply stated, risk is the degree of probability that an investment will make or lose money. When evaluating risk, there are two important elements to understand. The first is the investor’s own ability to tolerate risk, and the second is the risk of the investment itself. Why is it important (risk vs. r...

The Tehachapi Museum's newest exhibit features a very interesting machine, circa 1920s to 1930s, designed for giving women permanents. The permanent wave machine looks like a torture device from a science fiction movie, and could be very dangerous. And considering the combination of wet hair and electricity, it was! Curlers were attached to an apparatus called a chandelier which took some of the weight off the curlers and kept them tidy, but gives the appearance of a torture devise. Included in...
