    Marlan Woodside, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

Our Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum has just received, on loan, the beautiful steam to diesel transition era print of the Tehachapi Loop. The print is being displayed on the west wall of the agent's office next to the map of the railroad's path from Bena to Summit. Here is a brief background of the artist. Larry Fisher's interest in railroading has been life-long. Born into a railroad family, as a child he exchanged railroad sketches with his father, whose work as a brakeman and conductor for...

  • 'Pump first, then pay: this is Tehachapi not L.A.'

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

I remember for years making my customary drive from my home in Thousand Oaks to my office on Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks by way of the Ventura Fwy. The drive was always a guessing game. You didn't know if it would take 45 minutes or an hour and 45 minutes. You just got in one lane, turned on music or an audio book and like a zombie just kept edging along the road. This was life and you did not know there was an alternative. One day I came up to Tehachapi to visit my old friend Bob Stewart who...

  • TVAA Youth Art Contest winners

    Gale Caldwell, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

The Tehachapi Youth Art Contest is on display this month at Gallery 'N' Gifts. This annual event has been showcasing art by local students for over 30 years. First Friday was quite the event with students, family, friends and community visitors coming to see what this year's artists had to offer. This event is so popular it requires a second special showing on Saturday morning with a cookie and punch reception from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., which is always a hit with the young artists. "This is the...

  • Spring is here or is it?

Rick Gillies, Mountain Gardens Nursery & Pet, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

Last year I talked about the damage to trees because of the near zero temperatures in March 2022. Thanks to those of you who took my advice and saved those trees. This year's winter is totally different, cold and soggy. I know people who couldn't get out of their house for a couple of weeks because of the snow. The drought is over. What does that mean? No water rationing. You can have a yard again and garden, get your landscape back in shape. Trees, flowers, shrubs, trees and ground cover! You...

  • Can you benefit from a 529 plan?

Jennifer Palakiko, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Apr 15, 2023

Another school year is coming to a close. And if you have young children, they're now a year closer to heading off to college or some other type of post-secondary education or training. So, if you haven't already done so, you may want to start preparing for these costs. And they can be considerable. During the 2022-23 school year, the average estimated annual cost (tuition, fees, room and board, books, supplies, transportation and other personal expenses) was nearly $28,000 for public four-year...

  • Thinking about sportsmanship

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

Sportsmanship is on my mind today. What it is, what it means, what it looks like. Why it's important. I Googled the word, and this is the definition that comes up: "fair and generous behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports contest." Google goes on to define the "true meaning" of sportsmanship as "an understanding of and a commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity, and general goodwill toward an opponent. It is an affirmation that an athlete is disciplined enough to...

  • City Council adopts resolution opposing proposed voter initiative to remove local control

    City of Tehachapi|Apr 15, 2023

On Monday, April 4 the Tehachapi City Council unanimously approved a resolution opposing Initiative 21-0042A1 which has collected enough signatures to appear on the Statewide November 2024 ballot. Also known as the “Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act” the Tehachapi City Council was quick to note that the catchy title is misleading, as this proposal to change the California State Constitution would cost local taxpayers local control, including invalidating the 57% approval for ‘Measure S’ the one-cent sales tax increas...

  • National Day of Prayer in Tehachapi

    Brian Drucker, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

National days of prayer have been declared all the way back to the times of the thirteen colonies, and then by Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Harry Truman. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan made it law that the first Thursday in May would always be the National Day of Prayer. This year it will fall on Thursday, May 4. In light of all of the divisiveness and the danger that our country is in, asking God’s help seems like a great idea! In Tehachapi, there will be two main events on May 4. There will be a prayer rally in f...

  • What is step-up basis and why should I know about it? (part 2)

    Diana Wade, LDA|Apr 15, 2023

Step-up in basis is the reset in the cost basis of an inherited asset to its fair market value on the date of the decedent's death. Cost basis is what determines the taxes owed, if any, when the asset is sold. Cost basis starts with the price paid for an asset, plus any additional costs added over time to improve or maintain the original asset. Step-up in basis, or stepped-up basis, is what happens when the price of an inherited asset on the date of the decedent's death is above its original pur...

  • Blue Sage: beautiful, uncommon and cherished by Indian people

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

Wet, bountiful winters like we've just experienced benefit the irruptive wildflowers that bloom in profusion, like annual California Poppies, Hillside Daisies, Goldfields, Popcorn Flowers, and more. But generous water deliveries in the form of rain and snow are also helpful to perennials, of course – those hardy plants that persist year after year through freezing winters and long dry summers. One of the most beautiful and interesting of these perennials found in the Tehachapi Mountains is not a...

  • Wildlife seen in the Tehachapi Mountains in 1905

    Apr 15, 2023

    C. Hart Merriam was an amazing naturalist and anthropologist of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He came through Tehachapi in 1905 because he was interested in the flora, fauna and Native culture. He kept careful notebooks of his observations, and these are some excerpts that focus on wildlife he saw in the Tehachapi Mountains. Merriam recorded these observations: "In Tehachapi Valley saw many Ravens everywhere, some meadowlarks, 2 Says Phoebe, 2 Northern Shrike, several Mountain Bluebirds & 1...

  • My loved one is going to pass soon, what do I need to be ready for this day?

    Jason Wheeler, contributing writer|Apr 15, 2023

This is a great question and one which I hear often. Families usually want to come in right away and prepare. My first response is to tell them to stay home with your loved one. Time with your loved one is your most precious commodity. I have had instances where families were at the funeral home preparing and their loved one passed away while they were with me. This can be devastating. We can help you begin this difficult process at home and aid you in preparing for a meeting with an arrangement counselor after your loved one has passed. I advi...

  • EGR valve

    Protech Auto Service|Apr 15, 2023

It is pretty amazing how auto makers have been able to consistently build more powerful engines in vehicles that get better fuel economy while at the same time meeting increasing environmental standards. One of the little miracles that helps make this happen is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve. The EGR valve routes some exhaust back into the air intake system in both gasoline and diesel engines. The exhaust gas takes up some space in the engine cylinders, replacing some of the...
