My friend Lauraine Snelling and I went north last week to Ridgecrest with a dual agenda. She had business to take care of at the DMV there, and I wanted to visit the China Lakes Air Museum. We decided to combine business with pleasure and go together for a day trip. It turned out to be a great choice, and a great day. It was a warm and sunny (but windy!) day, and we were pleasantly surprised to see lots of wildflowers on the way up the 14, both in the hills to the west and on the desert floor...
This column will take a look at the upcoming Bystander Intervention requirement for management and employees in the workplace. Recently, on The Morning Show's Hiring to Firing podcast, Bystander Responsibility in the Era of #MeToo was the featured topic. The history of the bystander effect goes back to 1968 involving John M. Darley and Bibb Latane, both psychologists who were interested in the murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 New York City. Years later, bystander intervention became a training m...
Spring has arrived, or so it seems. In Tehachapi you never quite know what season it is. The local joke is that Tehachapi is the land of four seasons...all in one day. The sunny days and warmer weather can inspire folks to get out of the house and work in their yard. But there's one thing that you can enjoy regardless of the weather and that's indoor plants. Several studies have shown that an indoor garden can improve your mood, reduce stress and clear the air of toxins. With all those benefits...

While doing some research at Beale Library back in 1987, a mere 27 years ago, I could not resist copying some events listed in the old 1920 Tehachapi News. The temperatures occasionally skip a day. I searched ahead for February and March. Often people say, "We've never had weather like this in January before." Note the 79 degrees on Jan. 18, 1920. Maybe it's not global warming, after all? We could just say, "Yes, we have." Mostly though, I read of citizens' lives 94 years ago. Fortunately I...
I'm sure you've heard about or seen ads for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). But what are they, how do they work, and why would you need one? If you don't subscribe to a VPN service, when you use the internet, your computer connects to your service provider (AT&T, Race, Spectrum, or somebody else) and then to the site you want to visit. With a VPN, your computer connects to your service provider as usual but then gets re-routed to the VPN company's equipment, which could be anywhere. When you...
I was lucky to have great teachers growing up. My 7th grade English teacher was very remarkable. She was imposingly tall with black hair and big brown eyes. Her clothes were conservatively cut but she wore unfamiliar colors like deep burgundy and intense navy blue, often paired with wildly printed scarves. At the time I thought she was old but she was probably in her 30s. She had an exotic presence. From the first day she set the pace by setting down the rules and keeping us in line with her fie...

Carol and her husband Robert moved last year to be closer to family and soon after the move she passed. We will truly miss her smiling face and ever-giving generosity of our dear friend and Friends of the Depot (FOTD) member. The news of her passing on February 9 of this year was a shock to us all. Carol and her husband Robert have been solid supporters of FOTD activities since becoming members in July 2006. Robert and Carol were preparing to relocate to be closer to relatives, so they were...
At the April 3, Guild of Tehachapi meeting members were treated to a special treat. Joyce Stowers, a current volunteer, brought in a basket filled with fortune-telling, jelly bean Easter eggs. She passed them out to members at the door as they arrived for the meeting. Because of the cold, windy weather that Monday morning, attendance was down. Only 12 members, but business continued as usual. Call (661) 823-4114, if interested in volunteering. Next meeting is May 1, 2023 at Community Church,...
Earth Day is an annual holiday that has been celebrated since 1970. Despite somewhat humble beginnings, much of the globe now celebrates Earth Day, which this year takes place on Saturday, April 22. Earth Day has long drawn attention to issues affecting the planet and its climate. The effects of those issues have grown increasingly noticeable in recent years, which makes this Earth Day and all subsequent celebrations an ideal opportunity to celebrate the planet while learning about the many...

Even as a former employee, it will always be an interesting experience to visit Edwards Air Force Base. I was recently invited for a VIP tour at Edwards, which was held to get the word out about funds needed to complete projects and the new museum outside the west gates of the base. Rex Moen is the force behind a new fundraising plan called the "Life Friends Campaign," which is set to kick off May 1. Moen has been on the Flight Test Museum foundation Board of Directors for over 23 years....
Almost everyone at some point in their automotive ownership experience will visit their local auto repair shop. Whether you're a DIY weekend warrior or you just occasionally check your tire pressure and oil levels, once technicians have a look at your car they will likely make recommendations. Just like any relationship, communication is key. You don't have to be an expert to be informed but you do need to have a two-way conversation. Here are four technician questions you should always ask beyo...
In 2007 I was gifted the book "Hugo Cabret" written and illustrated by Brian Selznick. With extraordinary imagination, Selznick was able to fold us into his creation, weaving the story about a French train station, an orphaned boy and a mechanical automan holding the key to several mysteries. Selznick's words drew us in, but it was his simple drawings that captured us. Who would not like the adventure of living within the walls of a great train station? Or making a friend like Isabelle who...
