  • Mother's Day looms with sadness

    Kathleen Kline|Apr 25, 2015

She exuded a less than a subtle essences of elegance with her perfectly painted long manicured fingernails (she had them painted red most often for decades), and her professional colored and styled hair that classically mimicked her younger years. Then there was her never inexpensive clothing, accented by the 1-carate diamond stud earrings she sported. I don't think she had taken them off since my father said, "It's not much of an insurance policy, so purchase something to remember your father...

  • 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix'

    Bruce Gripkey|Apr 25, 2015

When I was first invited to write train related articles for The Loop several years ago, I had no idea what to expect or how long I could be productive. Having an ancestral background of railroad riders and workers willing to regale their accounts of riding the rails certainly does make my job easier. There is also an urgency to commit these wondrous stories to print lest the last generation to use trains as their primary form of transport be silenced by time. Grandpa Frank, his daughter...

  • Landscape Strategies during an epic drought

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings Co Water Dis|Apr 25, 2015

Hot Tip #1 – Don’t fertilize this spring or summer. Fertilized plants start growing faster and need more water. With some exceptions, your landscape plants can get by without fertilizer. Hot Tip #2 – Deep infrequent watering is more effective than watering frequently for just a few minutes. Hot Tip #3 – Only water what’s important. Vegetable gardens are making food. Trees provide shade and improve your property value. If you have an award-winning rose garden that you love, that’s important! Most of the shrubs in our landscapes can get by with...

The warmth that comes with spring brigns increased sightings of Rattlesnakes in Kern County. • Buying investment property

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Apr 25, 2015

Have you ever wanted to be a land baron? There are still some “deals” to be had in the housing market, but what does it take to buy rental property these days if you can’t pay cash? The most challenging prohibitions are Fannie Mae’s and Freddie Mac’s limits on the number of financed properties per borrower. You cannot have an interest in more than four financed one-to-four unit properties when buying a rental home. For so many investors who bought several houses the last time around, this prov...

    Guiseppe V.|Apr 25, 2015

Midst the stories of couples that are celebrating their umpteenth anniversary there are scenarios of those who have loved and lost through divorce and other equally unhappy circumstances. I know. I speak for the latter group. Blame my daughter. She encouraged me to go online, seek out a suitable partner and as she put it, “For crying out loud, cut ten years off your age – they all do it, and you don’t look that old!” Now, I’ve done this online dating before and it was entertaining if nothing else and I’ve met some nice people but the playing...

  • Up in smoke

    Apr 25, 2015

Two of the most common New Year’s resolutions are to stop smoking and to lose weight. While both are good ways to become healthier, together they pose a different challenges. Smoking is a difficult habit to break because nicotine acts to give energy, soothe nerves and increase calories burned. When someone stops smoking, the base problems stay, such as needing more pep and trying to remain calm. Weight GAIN is common because your body is no longer burning the extra 500 calories that it did when you smoked. Also, like any other addiction, in o...
