The Tehachapi Railroad Depot and Museum has been open now for five years. Its success is unprecedented in the world of “all volunteer” run organizations across the nation. This is because of the love and dedication of all of its volunteers. The Depot held a volunteer appreciation night and honored many with five-year pins for their long-term dedication. Buzz and Marilyn Wells have a single Lady Banks Rose (Rosa Banksiae) in their backyard on Valley Boulevard that they planted 30 years ago, and it just keeps growing and growing. The gigantic rose, shown with Wells granddaughters Kennedy (left) and Delaney (right), now stands over 25 feet tall and covers an area of about 300 square feet. The Lady Banks rose originated in central and western China and has no thorns. Every Spring the rose produces delicate yellow blossoms that give off a sweet scent similar to that of violets. Non-profit Showcase organizer Linda Carhart was presented with a proclamation by Mayor Susan Wiggins and the Tehachapi City Council, at their April 20th meeting, recognizing April 12-15 as National Volunteer Week. The showcase was the first ever event of its kind locally and it was a resounding success with 42 participating non-profits. Earth Day received special attention at Tehachapi Community Congregational Church when poppies and buckwheat were planted in the peace garden. Pastor Nancy Bacon's sermon emphasized caring for God's earth. Julie St. John delivered a children's message about preserving Earth’s resources and recycling. Children helped with placing plants around the peace pole, which was suggested by Esther Burdine a few years ago. The pole has words in various languages with prayers for peace on earth. Tehachapi Cancer Society is doing an ongoing pool tournament at the Dog House. Part of the funds raised will be donated to Brant Lewter to help him with the cost of cancer treatment. The tournaments will be every Wednesday at 6 p.m through June 17, 2015, with a $10 buy in. Not only will you be helping Brant, but will be helping other local cancer patients.
