  • City water and wastewater operations

    Greg Garrett, Tehachapi City Manager|Apr 28, 2018

I am often amazed at the quality of work performed by the employees here at the City of Tehachapi. The work required in several departments is performed on a daily basis by educated and talented individuals that keep the City running. One of the more important areas is our water and wastewater operations. For you, the residents, you expect clean water to be in the tap, and wastewater to leave your homes and businesses in the City sewer system. One of the many tasks of a full-service City like...

  • Learning and laughing with Mom

    Mel White|Apr 28, 2018

Some years ago I shared a funny email with my mother titled "Things my mother taught me." She laughed as hard as I did because, after all, mothers are also daughters (my mother had the same sort of wonderful relationship with my grandmother that I had with her, and she learned the same lessons from her mother). And because I enjoyed the lessons I was taught, and I remember so fondly laughing with my own mother about this list, I want to share it once again with all of you in honor of the...

  • Saving for College? Consider a 529 Plan

Ben Graham, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Apr 28, 2018

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. May 29 (5/29) is National 529 College Savings Plan Day. If you are not familiar with 529 plans, you are not alone – although these plans have been around since 1996, many people are still unaware of their existence. And that's unfortunate, because a 529 savings plan can be a valuable tool for anyone wanting to help a child, grandchild, friend or other family member save for education. Here are some o...

  • Cold War school plans

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro Tempore|Apr 28, 2018

In my last column I discussed how the Golden Queen Mine was designated to be used as a bomb shelter in the event of a nuclear attack in 1961. I found an article my mother Marion Deaver had saved again from 1961 discussing evacuation plans for the Tehachapi Unified School District. The November article outlined how students were "currently undergoing extensive indoctrination on survival procedures." The District Superintendent Dr. Boyd Lehman wanted the staff and students to be prepared in case o...

  • This year marked the 76th Anniversary of the Doolittle Raiders

    Cathy Hansen|Apr 28, 2018

Morale in America was low after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and something needed to be done to raise the spirits of the people who found themselves plunged into World War II. A U.S. Naval Submarine Officer was thinking way outside of the box when he proposed having land-based aircraft fly off of a Navy aircraft carrier and strike back at Japan. At the time, Chief of Naval Operations, Ernest J. King, had an unusual, but strategic vision that the Japanese were so focused and rig...

  • City Adopt-A-Flag Program is back again!

    Apr 28, 2018

In 2012 the City of Tehachapi introduced a sponsorship program that allowed businesses, organizations, families or individuals to sponsor an American flag in downtown Tehachapi. The sponsorship program, known as the "Adopt-A-Flag" program, gives Tehachapi and its residents an opportunity to show off their pride and patriotism for America. The City has approximately 100 decorative light posts on Tehachapi Boulevard, Green Street, F Street, Curry, Robinson, and the Mill Street corridor right off...

    Nick Smirnoff, NPPA|Apr 28, 2018

A day filled with fishing, fun, and family time took place at the annual Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District's Spring Fishing Derby. TVPRD Director Michelle Vance was elated with the nearly 350 participating anglers and she enthusiastically thanked BHE Renewables for their monetary contribution making it possible for last week's purchase of 2,100 pounds of trout for restocking....
