  • Interview with Alex Zonn, president of Tehachapi Community Theater

Dorothy McReynolds, TCTs Chair of Publicity|May 13, 2017

My interview with Alex Zonn, president of Tehachapi Community Theater (TCT), took place while Zonn was directing "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, which opened Friday, May 5, at the BeeKay Theatre. When I first met Alex last year, we were preparing for TCT's annual Playwrights Festival. I wasn't ready to hear Zonn's voice. His distinctive pitch goes from a resounding depth reaching the furthest person in the back row of a theater to a tone that comforts the tiniest child a foot away. How did...

  • Chilling the dough

    Dennis Cowden, The Cookie Engineer|May 13, 2017

The last article covered the mixing of the dry and wet cookie ingredients to make the dough, and now you would probably think it's time to ball up the batter, put it on the cookie sheet and bake them. Any cookie dough with a lot of butter, like chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, peanut butter cookies, etc. benefit with a stay in the refrigerator. Try this with dough's based on flour, sugars, butter, and egg, or ones with strong flavors. This will give the batter more body and your cookies...

  • Tehachapi Martial Arts Center black belt test

    Ida Kostianis|May 13, 2017

I haven't practiced at Tehachapi Martial Arts Center (TMAC) in years but today my dad is testing for his 3rd degree and I've been invited to attend. Walking into the studio where eight students were practicing, I was greeted with smiles and hugs reminding me of what it meant to be a part of the TMAC family. While some may think a room of black belts practicing would be strict and intimidating, it was genuinely sweet to see each student coping with the anxiety that comes before every test. No...

  • Want wildflowers?

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District|May 13, 2017

Fire clearance season comes early this year, and the sound of mowers and weed whackers echoes off the mountainsides. Just what are we whacking anyway, and what if it took almost no extra effort to increase the amount and variety of wildflowers on your land? Since Spaniards brought cattle to the new world, California has undergone a wholesale change from native perennial flowering plants and grasses to non-native annual grasses that grow fast, die young, and fuel conflagrations of wildfire. Most...

  • The good old days in Hollywood are gone

    Phyllis Belcher|May 13, 2017

They don't make movies like they used to. That was how Dan Branson began his talk to the Kiwanis Club last week. He went on to tell about his early days as a screen writer in Hollywood. He feels movies these days are produced by what he calls corporate types who hate to take risks. They rely too much on sequels and remakes and produce more bad movies than good ones. Kiwanis members were thoroughly entertained with stories Dan Branson related about early days in Hollywood when movies were...

  • Back pain is overtreated

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|May 13, 2017

This article was first published in 2010, but have things really changed? I think not. An article written by Lauran Neergaard, and appearing in the Bakersfield Californian on June 22, 2010 suggested that back pain is over-treated in a lot of cases. As a practicing chiropractor I have thought this for a long time. The article begins: “Why did they cut you?” “This question came from a respected spine surgeon to a man who was still in severe pain following an earlier operation. This, after two o...

  • Are you driving your wealth?

    Jay Thompson|May 13, 2017

I want to share with you something that is amazing to me. I overheard a conversation in a coffee shop the other day between three teenage girls. They were talking about the parents of one of their friends who had just bought an expensive Range Rover. One of the teenage girls said to the others, “Wow, they are so rich!” Well, I couldn’t just sit there and not say anything, so I chimed in saying, “You know, what you drive doesn’t have anything to do with whether you’re rich or poor.” The...

  • It's that time of year again

    May 13, 2017

I walk the ranch every morning and every night just to check and make sure all is well with the critters. It is a peaceful time and I enjoy the quiet time to just visit with my friends the animals. This morning baby rabbits were scampering everywhere and it reminded me that it is that time of the year: The time when little ones are everywhere and I start getting phone calls, and this year is shaping up to be busier than usual based on the abundance of forage as a result of the rains. At...
