  • Still surviving, my pet tree

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|May 14, 2022

Some years back I ordered, from a little catalog, a strip of something with inserted flower seeds. All one has to do is lay it down in the flower bed and water it. I can do that. I am not too handy when it comes to planting little seeds. They allow me to water them, though. The little strip of seeds – pansies – sprouted right on time and their pretty little faces, all identical, so lovely. Suddenly, I am sure those pansies were shocked to see a strange spear-like green "thing". I felt sorry for...

  • The otherworldly Trona Pinnacles

    Mel White, contributing writer|May 14, 2022

If you like rocks and rock formations and geological wonders, you'll love visiting the Trona Pinnacles. I took off to see them again on a recent Tuesday. Just about 20 miles east of Ridgecrest on SR 178, a BLM sign marks the turn to the Trona Pinnacles National Landmark, and although you can see them from the highway, at that distance the pinnacles look rather small and relatively uninteresting. Taking the five-mile dirt road (washboard and rocky and sandy) across the desert right up into the...

  • By any other name

    Mel White-Mel Makaw, contributing writer|May 14, 2022

In "Romeo and Juliet" Shakespeare wrote: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Basically, what that means is that what really matters is what something is, not what it is named or called. I sure hope he was right. To wit: I'm changing my pen name from Mel White to Mel Makaw, and while how I smell is pretty much irrelevant, I hope that how I write will still be as worth reading. My real full name is Marilda Kay White. My folks read the name Marilda...

  • Why would my attorney recommend a payable on death account? (part two)

    Diana Wade, LDA|May 14, 2022

The are some drawbacks with POD account, of course. You can't name an alternate or contingent beneficiary. If the person you name predeceases you, that account will likely transfer to the estate. Then it will likely go through probate. POD accounts may result in issues regarding paying taxes, debts and other expenses of the estate. It gets messy if the executor of your estate is not the beneficiary of the account. The executor is the person in charge of paying those debts and administering the...

  • Tehachapi orchard history: the glory of great fruit

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|May 14, 2022

High quality, great tasting fruit grows on trees today in the Tehachapi area, and has since some of the first homesteaders put trees in their own gardens beginning in the 1860s. The earliest commercial orchards were planted a decade or two later. A man named Moses Hale planted an apple orchard here in 1880, and another named Joseph Kiser planted an apple orchard in upper Brite Valley in the 1870s, and sold some of the apples they produced to Southern Pacific Railroad, which apparently supplied t...
