Yep, passwords again. Once upon a time, say a whole two or three years ago, "they" told us to change our passwords regularly. The thinking was that if someone had your Facebook or email password, they could log in to your account to, I don't know, check up on your posts and emails? If they had your bank or credit union password, they could transfer money. The theory was that changing your passwords frequently would eventually lock these people out of your account, no harm, no foul. And it...

Unfortunately, with spring comes some unwanted "guests," too. Weeds, weeds and more weeds! As if just normal weeds weren't bad enough, up here in Tehachapi we get foxtails. Lots and lots of foxtails! Weeds can cause dogs to itch and scratch but those darn foxtails can do some serious damage to your pup. Foxtails can get in your pet's ears, nose, eyes and...

At their May 17 meeting, the City Council approved credit card processing fees for utilities and other services. As always, the City of Tehachapi continues to accept credit cards, debit cards and e-checks in payment of utility bills. Credit card companies and merchant processors charge the city processing fees for each transaction, which the government allows to be passed on to the customer. Until last March, the City charged customers a $4 convenience fee for credit card charges in $300...

Life With Pepe during this ongoing pandemic frequently brings unexpected episodes to my rather boring, self imposed, sheltering-in-place routines. Last fall Dogs For Better Lives (DFBL) – Pepe's alma mater – encouraged me to enter Pepe's shelter rescue and his coming into my life, in the Petco Holiday Wishes Grant program. Thousands of entries are submitted each year and the chances for a winning story are slim as there are only about 50 winning submissions. The entry could not be more than 500...

Memorial Day is coming up and for many of us, the three-day Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer activities like picnics, swimming, vacations and summer softball. It may be the weekend you start on your yard work or plant the flower boxes; it may be a good time for a long motorcycle ride or a long session on the chaise lounge with a good book. It can still be pretty cool in the mountains but it's still a weekend that many like to go camping for the first time in the year. This...

Even though the pictured home was destroyed by the 1952 Earthquake, at one time in the 1890s, it was the first home travelers would see as they drove up the narrow, winding road from Bakersfield and parts north into the town of Tehachapi. Driving in on old Highway 466, the road made a sharp turn to the left and for a quarter of mile on Curry Street one traveled down a lane of orchards; pears on the right and cherries to the left. Then immediately to the left one viewed a classically beautiful...

Doug DeGeer has resigned as head varsity football coach for the Tehachapi Warriors, putting THS in unfamiliar territory, seeking their second head coach in five years. DeGeer, who coached a total of three seasons for Tehachapi and was unable to play in 2020 due to COVID-19, replaced hall of fame coach Steve Denman who retired following his 35th season in 2016. DeGeer posted a 10-23 record at the helm of the Warriors; he led the team to the 2017 Southeast Yosemite League championship and reached...
This is the 14th article in a continuing series about local military veterans and their service to our great country. Tracey Keefe (née Alexander) was born and grew up in Massachusetts. Her parents owned and operated a small school bus company. "They were really awesome people," Tracey said. "Their doing that business, particularly in the winter, taught me a lot about determination and fortitude, about doing the right thing every day." Tracey attended grade school and high school in a town...
We are all placed in different roles in our business and personal lives sometimes on a daily basis. There are always situations where we are the student learning an activity or a new skill. Later the same day our situation may change, and we find ourselves in the instructor or leadership role. Some of us then go home and assume the role of mom or dad now becoming, "chief cook and bottle washer," and assume all the roles. Part of the trick is defining what your role should be in each situation...

Owning your home outright can help provide financial flexibility and stability during your retirement years. Even if you still make mortgage payments, the equity in your home is a valuable asset. And current low interest...

One of the greatest concerns that a homeowner can have is regarding their septic system. If you aren't on septic, odds are you know someone who is, so you'll want to keep reading. Septic fears can be so great that some people won't even purchase a home that is on septic, which is a shame because it doesn't need to be that way. The folks over at John the Plumber want to help you get over any concerns or fears you have about septic systems and give you some tips to help extend the life of your...
As an enologist (winemaker), the two most satisfying moments in wine-ma king are first enjoying a glass of wine that you started making two years ago and secondly, bottling. The first is obvious but the bottling process has many moving parts that have to come together at just the right time. It all begins months before the bottling date. Any new labels need to be approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) in Washington, D.C. (basically another way to tax). Glass bottles and...
