As Memorial Day approaches, I find it interesting how enjoyable it is to hear or read about historical stories about flying, especially if it occurred in our local skies? When he found out how much I liked aviation history, he contacted his fellow Marine Corps pilot friend, Charles (Pat) Weiland in...

But I must acknowledge the flip side--the changeable weather, the thriving weeds, the allergies and the cleanup that must be managed. We at Pioneer True Value Home Center are here to help you make it "all better." Walk around your yard and determine what needs to be done. We have to clear our land by June 1 to comply with the Kern County guidelines so that is the priority....

This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. If you’re a certain age, or getting close to it, you might hear something like this: “Now that you’re older, you need to invest more conservatively.” But what exactly does this mean? Since that time, the city has been refining and designing the Northside Neighborhood Sidewalk project. The last step for starting the project is an agreement between the...
At the May 11 East Kern Economic Alliance meeting, Adventist Health president and CEO Charlotte Briggs spoke about the problems that the healthcare district has faced in getting the new hospital licensed and open. Thanks to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), many codes have changed since the beginning of construction and the hospital must meet all the codes before it can be licensed and "there is licensing for everything," she said. Most frustrating are the new...

Today, We Honor The Overall Man Classic Bill Mead Reprinted with permission from Tehachapi Lifestyle Magazine, November 2012 issue. When I was a small lad in Iowa we had Civil War veterans in our Memorial Day parades. Today, I find that hard to believe even though I was there. The memory of those old Union soldiers whose war tales are now buried with them prompted me a few years ago to try writing a family history of my Dad's experiences in the First World War. By then it was clear that before...

There are very few herb plants that I can't easily give away. White horehound (marrubium vulgare) is one of these! It is scorned and considered a weed by those who do not know of its historical and practical virtues. Let us look at this herb that grows so easily and is so disliked by many gardeners. It is an upright, bushy and hardy perennial with wooly stems and rounded hairy leaves that have serrated edges and a musky smell. The small white flowers grow in dense whorls (circular patterns)...
This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, and for many of us, this weekend signals the beginning of summer activities like picnics, vacations and baseball or softball games. It may be the weekend you clear your land of weeds or plant the garden; or take a long motorcycle ride or a session on the chaise lounge with a good book. It might still be cool in our mountains (and snow is not really ever out of the question) but it’s a weekend that many (including me) like to think “outside” more and more....
Zack Scrivner addressed the Kern County budget crisis at the May Chamber of Commerce luncheon. He told local businesses that the shortfall was primarily due to the unprecedented drop in oil prices. Oil prices were once over $100 a barrel. This dropped first to $55 a barrel and then to $35. The resulting shortfall caused a drastic reduction in tax revenue for the county and local communities. He added that oil reserves have been used to mitigate the loss but the budget still will need to be cut...
