  • Hold on to Your Ballot Box!

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|May 28, 2016

At this point in this "forever" presidential campaign, Fiddlers Crossing decided a little levity would be in order, in the form of political satirist Roy Zimmerman. Saturday, June 4, will mark his second appearance at Fiddlers Crossing. He played to a sold-out crowd in 2014. While Zimmerman may not change any minds a few days before our primary, he should at least give us an evening of hilarity. He is, after all, "an equal opportunity offender." He finds just about everything and everyone funny...

  • A Different Perspective

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|May 28, 2016

My sister and I visited Ireland this past week. While we thought that the country was beautiful and the people were both gracious and friendly, we were both surprised by two things. First, there was a discussion on the BBC that many of the British surgeons wanted to make it mandatory that obese English citizens obtain a gastric banding to combat the problem. Not surprisingly, there also were many physicians who thought mandatory surgery went a bit too far too fast. I have to agree with the second opinion: surgery should be the last resort, not...

  • The Spirit of Tehachapi

    Pat Gracey|May 28, 2016

Once again I will include a little episode from my husband’s Marine Corps thirty year career; a little glimpse of life in the “old Corps,” by CWO-4 Doyle D. Gracey, Jr. USMC: I was a member of the Marine Corps Base Rifle Team at Camp Pendleton on our way to compete at the First Hawaii Invitational Rifle Matches at Palau Point, probably sometime in the early 1960s. Our means to get there was a C-130 out of El Toro, California. There were eight of us and we boarded the big multiengine air craft pr...

  • A Page of History

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|May 28, 2016

Last column’s topic was Mojave Airport as of 1986. We noted how the Space Port, as it is now called, has grown considerably since then. I promised I would write about “another view” of Mojave, as written by a reporter from the New Yorker Magazine after he had visited the airport to cover test flights of the Voyager as it prepared for its around the world flight and record attempt. The August 4, 1986 magazine article featured the opinions of Burton Burnstien. He first interviewed Dick Rutan...

  • Planning Your Estate – Part 8

    Charlotte Ruse|May 28, 2016

Income Taxes – As long as you are the trustee or a co-trustee, no separate income tax returns are required to be filed for your living trust. The taxpayer identification number for the trust is your social security number and all income and deductions related to the assets held in the trust are reportable on your individual income tax returns. When you are no longer a trustee of your trust, then income tax returns must be filed by the trustee, reporting all of the income and deductions relating...

At the May 24 meeting, Heinlein presented drawings that clearly explained the vision for the new wing. Heinlein said that he needed a board consensus in order to move forward with the planning for the wing. Options presented were whether to include eight or ten classrooms and...

  • Our National Mammal

    Diana Frieling|May 28, 2016

Some animals are just special. That perfectly describes Valentine. Who knew you could love a bison? But from the moment I saw Valentine, it has been that way. It was early February when I got the call. A ranch in Cuayama had sold its herd of 300 bison for slaughter. One of the cows had dropped a calf the week before and the owner was looking for someone to take it. Thankfully he didn't feel right letting the baby go off to slaughter. And so on Valentine's day, 9 years ago, I headed to Cuayama,...
