  • Mental health support at Cornerstone

Rev. Joshua Pierce, Mdiv. RADT, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

Writing about mental illness, even during mental health awareness month, is a difficult task. I find that the stigma creates a barrier that prevents the natural flow of ideas from making it to the page. The issue tends to compound when I attempt to share my own story. I can talk and share about my struggles long past with ease, but the more recent pieces are more difficult. Maybe, because I am still attempting to process them. So here it goes… As many of you already know, I have struggled w...

  • Using locally grown Blooms

    Laura Brubaker, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

At Blooms, one of our goals when we started our business was to work with local Tehachapi growers when possible in order to source fresh flowers grown right here in Tehachapi soil. There are several advantages and benefits to using local sources. First, when we buy locally sourced flowers, we know exactly how old those flowers are, whether or not they have had pesticides used on them, and how they have been handled, basically from the seed stage to the cutting stage. Sometimes I even cut them my...

  • Have you experienced power loss in your home or business?

    John McCraw, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

Let's talk about standby and portable generators. Stand-by generators are on a permanent pad and hooked to your natural gas or propane. They will start up automatically when the power goes off and shut off when it returns online. Portable generators need to be stored in the garage and brought out and plugged into a transfer switch then unplugged and restored when the power comes back online. Both generators are a great investment for your home or business, and it's all on your budget or your...

  • Investor, know thyself: how your biases can affect investment decisions

    Lance Patton, Financial Advisor|May 28, 2024

Traditional economic models are based on the premise that people make rational decisions to maximize economic and financial benefits. In reality, most humans don't make decisions like robots. While logic does guide us, feelings and emotions - such as fear, excitement, and a desire to be part of the "in" crowd - are also at work. In recent decades, another school of thought has emerged. This field - known as behavioral economics or behavioral finance - has identified unconscious cognitive biases...

  • The biggest Joshua tree

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

If a tree lives long enough in the right conditions, with a lifespan measured in centuries rather than years, it can grow so large that it dwarfs the rest of its kind. There is a Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) growing near California City that fits this description. It is simply a magnificent specimen, an amazingly large version of the familiar Joshuas that populate the Mojave Desert east of the Tehachapi Mountains. Different environments have what biologists call indicator species – d...

  • Beauty at the TNAZ Cruizin Car Show

    Mark La Ciura, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

As always, the 3rd annual TNAZ Cruizin Car Show was a big hit on May 18. The show brought in more than 60 hot rods and custom cars. A fantastic mix of historical American cars from Ford to Chevy to Oldsmobile. My favorite was a local Tehachapi car. A 1937 Oldsmobile restored by Tom from Tehachapi. Originally Tom was trying to sell the Oldsmobile for a friend as a favor and he just could not find a buyer. So, Tom got the Oldsmobile for himself to work on. It turned out to be a labor of love...

  • You want me to do what?

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

Leadership, most people assume you’re born with the traits, but I think it’s more situational than most people might realize. Look at some of our national and international leaders to see what I mean. For decades, Winston Churchill sat on the sidelines when it came to his country’s leadership. Then when World War II started, the country instinctively reached for him and he was there rising to the pinnacle of leadership of the free world with his actions and his speech. He led a nation, but a...

  • The circle of life, baseball and the Tehachapi Warriors

    Corey Costelloe, contributing writer|May 28, 2024

"The other sports are just sports. Baseball is a love." – Sportscaster, Bryant Gumbel That love was on display on May 14 when the Tehachapi Warriors varsity baseball team played their final game of the season in an 8-4 loss to Exeter in the CIF Central Section Division III playoffs, hosted here in Tehachapi. While it did not come out in favor of our Warriors, there were moments of the day that members of my family and I will never forget. Not only was it the first time in quite a while that t...
