  • Keep Tehachapi litter free

    Laurie Rude Betts, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

CalTrans has recently had roadside trash picked up along Highway 202 from the four-way stop at Cummings Valley Road to Tucker Road. This was a big project, as the amount of litter was considerable, particularly in the area of Old Town. I was embarrassed to think that visitors to our area were seeing the pride of Tehachapi – NOT! To demonstrate our pride in the Greater Tehachapi area, we should encourage every organization in this area to adopt a section of Highway 202 to keep litter free. I hate to think of the many months and the amount of t...

  • Famous futuristic cars: How they influenced the industry

    Protech Auto Service|Jun 5, 2021

The exhibit “Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas” was held at the High Museum of Art Atlanta in 2014, and it featured the world’s most stunning concept cars built between 1934 and 2001. In many instances, seemingly futuristic cars like the ones in this exhibit influence what’s to come in the automotive industry. For instance, William Stout’s Scarab, built in 1936, was inspired by the shape of a scarab beetle. While it seemed radical at the time, the shape eventually gave way to a classic automotive style: the minivan. Here are some...

  • Ransomware

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Jun 5, 2021

Ransomware is one of the biggest and fastest-growing threats online. The year 2020 saw a massive spike in ransomware attacks and the amount of money paid out to criminals. Quick refresher: Ransomware is malware or malicious software. Malware can damage your computer or your files. Computer viruses, worms, trojan horses and spyware are all considered malware. I think any program that advertises itself as free and then makes you pay for it once it's installed on your computer is malware, too....

  • Fourth of July free barbecue!

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

One of my earlier memories from the 1930s was Tehachapi's 4th of July free barbecue! It was taken for granted that everyone would be in the City Park and have a wonderful meal that included beef prepared in deep-pit style cooking where the meat is slow cooked for 24 hours in an underground pit. Word spreads fast when the term "free" is included and people from near and far came; some as far as Los Angeles. Our small community, in the 1930s, had a population of a scant 1,000 souls, including the...

  • Memorial Day in Bear Valley Springs

    Linda Coverdale, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

On Memorial Day a service took place at the Cub Lake Veteran's Memorial in Bear Valley Springs. Ben Chavez, US Army Vet, gave the introduction and then called for the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was beautifully rendered by Tamara Solange. Martin Hernandez, the BVSVA Commander, spoke and asked, "Are we worthy of the sacrifices these servicemen gave?" Many Honorees were remembered this day. Each has a plaque on the pillars at Cub Lake Memorial and the widow of each member was called...

  • Memorial Day in Tehachapi

    Pat Doody, staff writer|Jun 5, 2021

Memorial Day in Tehachapi was full of ceremony, honor and a grand parade. A large crowd gathered to watch the parade travel down F Street to Central Park, where a flag raising ceremony took place accompanied by a 21-gun salute and the fly-over of a Navy biplane. The program in the park began with an opening prayer by American Legion Post 221 Chaplain Eric Purdy. It was followed by an address delivered by combat veteran Dave Reinhart, Dennis Ragsdale read the names of over 150 local veterans who...

  • Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

The Mojave Transportation Museum saluted radial engines at the May 15 Plane Crazy Saturday and Mike Nixon, president/CEO of Vintage Radials, was so good to come and tell everyone about these great round engines. It reminded me of some of the airplanes we have owned with big radial engines. In January 2003, we owned a C-123K Provider and my husband Al decided to start the engines. It sounds easy enough, but it takes a lot of preparation since it had been sitting for several months. The Fairchild...

  • Two roads diverged

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Jun 5, 2021

The Road Not Taken By Robert Frost, 1916 Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the...

  • Welcome summer!

    Mel White, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

I know that the official start of summer isn't for a couple of weeks yet (that is, June 21), but thanks to the weather and the Memorial Day weekend, I feel like summer has finally arrived. And I'm loving it! I hardly remember last summer at all. I know my store was closed for a couple of months while we were trying to figure out this new pandemic thing, and when we reopened, everything was different. And we were not alone. Many other businesses shut down for a few weeks, some never reopened. My...

  • Be grateful for the helpers

    Steve White, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

Now that "this" is beginning to wind down in our local area I – accompanied, of course, by my constant companion, Pepe – have just barely begun to take a toe step into potentially hot water during the SIP (sheltering in place), isolation routines that have been pretty much well established for us during the year 2020; now leading into mid 2021. Simple things, like meal planning and purchasing food combined with preparation and enjoying the pleasures of eating the meal itself, have been an eve...

  • Ron Rich – U.S. Navy Mobile Riverine Force (Task Force 117) Vietnam Veteran

    Dr. Craig Luther, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

This is the 15th article in a continuing series about local military veterans and their service to our great country. Ron was born in Wichita, Kansas, on Sept. 6, 1947. His father, just out of the service – he had fought with the Army in the Pacific Theater, at one time becoming trapped behind Japanese lines for six months until being rescued – was going to school in Wichita for the Boeing Aircraft Company, for which he would work as a machinist for several years. As a young boy, Ron moved bac...

  • Pain is an important warning sign

Anne Marie Novinger, RN - retired, contributing writer|Jun 5, 2021

Something untoward happened to me in 2006. One January night about 8 p.m. I felt pain behind my right lung, back side of scapula. It kept getting worse. My husband George went to bed (not feeling very well) and then I packed a bag. I sat in a lounge chair and hoped it would go away. But the pain just got worse and moved around to the front of my chest, so at 2 a.m. I drove myself to our local Tehachapi Hospital five miles from our house. Dumb? We are on a dark street – no street lights – and...
