  • TCT's 'The Foreigner' brings thoughtful laughs to BeeKay

    Shanan Harrell|Jun 8, 2019

To begin, for the sake of full transparency, I confess I am the proud director of this TCT production. Citizens of Tehachapi (and surrounding areas)! Listen up! There's a super fun comedy coming your way this June that you don't want to miss. The stage of the beautiful BeeKay Theatre will be transformed into a Georgia fishing lodge where TCT's "The Foreigner" will entertain you for an evening of giggles - while also serving up some tasty food for thought. • Anthropology: Experience the world in a different way

    Jun 8, 2019

There is a lot that we read and hear about when it comes to other parts of the world but actually visiting and experiencing another culture in person is quite different. Not only has Cerro Coso's Anthropology and Sociology instructor, Alec Griffin, traveled through 43 countries, he has also had some exciting and terrifying experiences along the way. Traveling to Cairo in 2013, 11 days after a coupe d'état deposed President Morsi, was among some of the craziest. The pyramids and Cairo museum...

  • River cruising on the Danube

    Jenni Richard|Jun 8, 2019

I recently returned from sailing on the Danube on the Viking Bragi. It is a unique way to see Europe, allowing you to see Europe up close and personal, all the while having a more intimate experience all around. The ocean liners with their massive ports and thousands of passengers disembarking on a single day can be quite overwhelming. Land tours can be exhausting because of the bus travel and the packing and unpacking. So if you have never considered trying a river cruise, here's why you...

  • Auricular acupuncture

    Stephanie Edman, L.Ac., MTOM|Jun 8, 2019

What is auricular acupuncture? Auricular acupuncture is a system utilizing points on the ears that was developed in the 1950s by the French physician, Dr. Paul Nogier (Gori, Fiernzuoli, 2007). The method has been described as a combination of reflexology and acupuncture. Several schools of auricular acupuncture have been developed over the years. One of the most prominent systems is the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association; or NADA protocol. This protocol was developed in the 1970s for treatment of addiction and has since been...

  • Public encouraged to take precautions during increased mosquito activity

    Jun 8, 2019

“Recent rainfall has created a lot of opportunities for mosquito breeding,” said Gene Abbott, district manager of Kern Mosquito and Vector Control. “We have detected more mosquito activity earlier in the year than normal. We need everyone in our community to help keep mosquitoes to a minimum by removing standing water around their homes.” “Warm weather typically leads to an increase in mosquito activity in Kern County,” said Matt Constantine, director of Kern County Public Health Services. “Kern residents should take precautions to protect th...

  • Meet Your New Neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Jun 8, 2019

In my opinion, San Diego County's loss is now Tehachapi's gain. Among Tehachapi's recent new residents are two families who have moved here from San Diego for "a change of pace." Both families have relatives living in the area and have occasionally come to visit in the past, treating their children to our four seasons, natural surroundings and some of Tehachapi's many events. Joe and Marsha LoMedico arrived in October. Joe said they really wanted a change of pace from the pressures of operating...

  • A new look

    Pat Gracey|Jun 8, 2019

While the City of Tehachapi was watching the country attempting to pull itself from the Great Depression, which had begun with the 1930s, there was a new look appearing in the downtown section. Green Street was paved for the first time in 1936 and two former Tehachapi mayors, Louis Kanstein and Frank Baumgart, built a movie theater which they named after themselves! Bee for Baumgart and Kay for Kanstein. Local contractor Vince Ninteman, was the construction superintendent. The theater closed in...

  • Netflix account sharing, previewing email, flooring your computer

    Greg Cunningham|Jun 8, 2019

The Netflix Terms of Use clearly prohibit you from sharing your Netflix account's password with family members, neighbors or friends. Yet, an estimated 24 million people do just that. That's 24 million people not paying Netflix for their service, but Netflix doesn't seem to care. Why not? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said, "password sharing is something you have to learn to live with, because there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse." And apparently,...

  • Enhancing other's lives enhances our own

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Jun 8, 2019

One of the perks of being clergy, is that after a number of years of service, most pastors are granted a temporary sabbatical leave. This becomes a chance to learn or experience some new things, go on retreat, and/or reconnect and refresh. Having served as Pastor at Tehachapi Community Church for over six years, I am going on sabbatical this summer. I look forward to spending time with family, helping out loved ones and having time to be in nature. I won't be writing for The Loop while I am...

  • Roof leaks in your rental

    Karen Drum-Sousa, Fair Housing advocate|Jun 8, 2019

Historically, landlords and tenants have been on opposite sides of the fence. Thankfully, the Fair Housing Laws define the rights of both as well as all aspects of housing transactions from rental, sales, realtors, management companies, insurance, etc. This column is designed to bridge the gap between the two. With all the snow and rain we had this year, roof leaks are springing up. If you are a tenant, the process to get the repair should be smooth. There are a few things that you, as a tenant,...

  • Maintain your power steering system

    Protech Auto Service|Jun 8, 2019

Although a number of newer vehicles are coming equipped with electric power steering, the vast majority of Tehachapi’s vehicles on the road use a hydraulic power boost system. With hydraulics, fluid is pressurized by a pump which actuates a hydraulic cylinder to reduce steering effort. Some of these pumps are powered by an electric motor. Most pumps are powered by the serpentine belt driven by the engine. Power steering fluid provides power assistance and also protects components from rust and corrosion. Manufacturers recommend that the f...

  • Business owners: What's your plan for retirement?

    Lance Patton|Jun 8, 2019

If you're a small-business owner, you probably pour your heart, soul and nearly all your money into your business. When it comes to retirement planning, do you cross your fingers and hope your business will provide the nest egg you'll need to live comfortably? What if you become ill and have to sell your business early? Or what if the business experiences setbacks just before you retire? Rather than relying on your business to define your retirement lifestyle, consider a tax-advantaged...

One of the Rotary Club of Tehachapi's favorite projects every year is distributing personalized books to every single kindergarten student throughout the Tehachapi Unified School District. Each individual book features the name of the student, names of the student's friends, the teacher's name, their school and their pets' names. This service project encourages literacy and the love of reading at an early age, because reading is the key to success in learning. During the last two weeks, 10...

  • Tehachapi weather, January through April

    Jon Hammond|Jun 8, 2019

What kind of weather can you expect in Tehachapi during each month? Here's a first look In the last issue of The Loop, I mentioned that I would give a little month-by-month look at weather in the Tehachapi Mountains. So this is the first installment of that monthly summary. Our weather is varied and over the years has often defied accurate prediction, but here's what you can reasonably expect from the first four months of the year. Bear in mind that Tehachapi weather is not always reasonable....

  • The most incredible linking of steam locomotives in history – and it happened in Tehachapi

    Jon Hammond|Jun 8, 2019

The following is Frank Nejedly's marvelous account of what may have been the greatest single assembly of steam locomotives in railroading history, and it occurred quite unintentionally in Tehachapi in November of 1942. Nejedly was a Southern Pacific telegrapher and amateur photographer who explored throughout this area – his 1911 Studebaker was one of the earliest cars in the Tehachapi Mountains. He was a handsome, robust man of keen intellect and memory, with an encyclopedic knowledge of trains...
