If you drive through the narrows of Banducci Road these days, between Brite Lake and the Alps Drive entrance to Alpine Forest, you'll see that the hillsides to the south are alight with the bright yellow blossoms of one of the Golden State's most epic shrubs: California Flannelbush (Fremontodendron californicum). A couple of hundred scattered shrubs, the size of old apple trees in an abandoned orchard, are glowing with the bright lemon yellow of their waxy flowers. The Flannelbush branches are...

"I failed shop class when I was in high school. It's election season again. Over the next several months, you're bound to hear an array of promises from the candidates and speculation from the pundits on what those promises, if enacted, could mean for the country. But, how might these possible outcomes affect your financial future? When considering this question, keep these points in mind: • Campaign promises aren't always kept. Presidential candidates often proclaim that they intend to institute major changes in tax or spending policies, o...
For many Tehachapi residents, Witt's Everything for the Office is a one-stop shop for office supplies, shipping needs, furniture and gifts. However, few people know how long this shop has served Tehachapi or of its full range of services. It started in the early 1980s when Marc Witt opened the doors to a small printing shop. "That was back when there was one blinking light in town to manage traffic, and the BeeKay Theatre was a candy shop," says Laura Coaly, current manager of Witt's. Laura has...

One sunny afternoon recently friends Leila and Julee and I had a delicious lunch together at Thai-Hachapi and then went for a yummy ice cream dessert at Frosty Frills (we were celebrating Julee's birthday!). After all that we decided to go out to the glider port – Mountain Valley Airport, off Highline Road – and see if there was anything going on. It was a beautiful, breezy day, and there was. The tow plane was busy pulling a couple of different gliders and people were waiting for rides. It was...

So after playing drums for roughly six years, I was drinking beers with my dad and my lead singer, Buddy Ammons, in the Panhandle of Florida at my father's house. Buddy says to my dad, "Rolie, you have no idea how amazing your son is on the drums! He's the best around." My WWII Marine Veteran, Finnish dad belts out in his Bowser-like voice, "Well, what're you gonna do RJ? Put a sign up in Ponce De Leon (FL) saying, 'The worlds best drummer lives down this dirt road!'" This was, of course,...
I never try to improvise or add facts just to make the story better. My brother, Everett, and a young girl named Dorothy Banducci, went to first grade together in Tehachapi. They were both six years of age. That's nothing to write home about but there are facts surrounding the Banducci name that are interesting. So, I will transport the story to the Stallion Springs area, long before anyone ever thought of doing any residential communities there. First, though, to set the scene: In the early...
Humans vary in the efficiency with which they burn and store nutrients in response to overeating. Some people waste more energy when they overeat and store less. Those individuals tend not to gain weight easily. Humans also vary in their reaction to food deprivation. Some conserve energy better than others and when they diet, they don't lose weight easily. Obesogens (chemicals that disrupt normal development and the balance of lipid metabolism) which have entered the environment in the last 50...
