We are here on the verge of our Independence Day, grateful for the opportunity to celebrate once again with our community. We have made the festival a little smaller, focusing our efforts on only one location, Philip Marx Central Park, but we have managed to cram an entire day's worth of activities into that park for all t...

  • Life, liberty and the pursuit of...plumbing?

    John Nelson|Jun 19, 2021

A well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence is "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." While it may not have been the direct intent of the signers to include the freedom of career choice in that statement, it certainly must have been on the fringes of thought. "Enjoying your job" would definitely be in the "happiness" column and the folks over at John the Plumber can attest to that. John Nelson, owner of John the Plumber says, "What can I say? I love my job!" John...

  • Independence Day... from your Mortgage!

    Alysha Boles, contributing writer|Jun 19, 2021

As we near the celebration of America's Independence, it got me thinking about American's efforts to gain independence from their mortgage. We then spend the next 30 plus years working hard to become free and independent of owning a home and of having a mortgage. With this in mind, I thought I would navigate through some strategies that can...

  • What about probate? (Part Three)

    Diana Wade, Estate Planning - CALDA|Jun 19, 2021

What if a person holds property in another state? If you own real estate in another state, that property might have to go through probate in that state, in addition to a probate in your primary state of residency. This is known as an "ancillary" probate. With a living trust you can avoid these multiple probate proceedings and have that property pass to your beneficiaries according to the terms of your trust directly without the additional costs and delays of an ancillary probate. In addition,...

But what did that mean, a secure website, and whatever happened to that green lock? A secure website uses the HTTPS protocol for connections. So you don't have to go look it up, HTTPS stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. A few years ago, Google, being the 600-pound gorilla they are, decided that all...

Dads tend to get taken for granted sometimes, and perhaps not thanked or acknowledged as often as they should be. Nevertheless, Father's Day is coming up and this is as good a time as any to recognize that special dad in your life (or anyone who has taken on that role for you). Some of my favorite quotes on fathers and Fatherhood: "Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers...
