When I was a kid, the best image of Pluto from Mount Palomar was a fuzzy dot. The great Hubble Space Telescope later gave us a fuzzy ball, which wasn’t much more satisfying. Something drastic had to be done about this problem. So in 2006, America vented its frustration by sending a grand-piano-sized probe called New Horizons to take a very good look at Pluto and its moons. We are a patient people. Now it is time to savor and celebrate. After over nine years in space, New Horizons will make i...
A couple weeks ago I was having Chinese food down in Bakersfield and opened up my fortune cookie. It said that I was to receive a “great honor”. It’s not that I put any store in what a cookie thinks, but I did try to think of anything that I might be in line for that could be considered an “honor”. And I came up with two. And they both came true. First, I had submitted some poems to be considered to read at the Woody Guthrie poets event at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in July. I have sinc...
It was bright-and-early and the beginning of another beautiful day! With my husband outside dealing with weed abatement issues, I called an emergency morning huddle with my three children, conveniently within earshot. My oldest son responded to my request by sauntering toward me still half asleep. My daughter, along with an oversized bow on her head, skipped into the room cheerfully and my middle child bolted down the hall like a race horse out of the gate. He dove over the back of the couch;...

While out at the lake a couple of weeks ago it was busy with people barbequing, swimming, and as always a few folks fishing. I always take a few minutes to watch what others are doing to see if someone is catching fish. It seems the order of the day was to have a lawn chair or some form of seat and kick back with a line in the water while consuming one’s favorite beverage. I am always struck by this kind of laid back style, taking it all in with some friends and casual conversation. It’s not...

Collected by the scouts over the past year each flag is properly folded and placed upon a table adjacent to Coy Burnett bleachers. Upwards of four hundred were collected this year and each flag is passed from teams of scouts who salute as they pass off the colors. Arriving at the numerous fire pits the flags are unfurled, held up for presentation, then folded and gently placed upon the fire. A salute by...

There are more than thirty varieties of savories. We will explore the two plants most commonly grown. They are satureja montana (winter savory), and satureja hortensis (summer savory). Both have a peppery- thyme flavor, but the winter savory is somewhat stronger. The word “satura” is derived from the Latin meaning, “satiated”. The flavor of this herb punched up the high starch Roman diet long before trade brought tropical spices like pepper to their tables. Savory was one of the strongest cooking herbs they had for two thousand years. It sati...
