Mike Melvill piloted SpaceShipOne on its first flight past the edge of space, (100 kilometers or 62 miles) Flight 15P, becoming the first commercial astronaut and the 434th person to go into space. SpaceShipOne, a Paul G. Allen project with Scaled Composites, launched the first private manned vehicle beyond the Earth's atmosphere. The successful launch demonstrated that...

  • Quality is paramount at basil farms in Italy

    Edna McCallion|Jun 22, 2019

I wondered if it was true that basil grown in the Liguria region of Italy was the best in the world. For over 30 years I heard this from both the herb and culinary communities. I thought it might be just hearsay based on pride in a crop so much a part of the culture. The opportunity to go to Liguria and discover for myself was the fulfillment of a dream. Researching the weather of this region it seemed that not all areas of Liguria would be suitable for year-round basil growing, as I knew it....

  • Bursting with life

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Jun 22, 2019

After the unseasonal cold snap in May that brought frigid rain and wind, Tehachapi gardens are alive under the summer sun. "I have my biggest bedding plant order coming in," Rick Gillies, owner of Mountain Gardens Nursery and Pet at the corner of C and Curry streets, said. The order features petunias with white sparkles on purple named "Night Sky" and bold yellow-striped red petunias named "Queen of Hearts." Every "Night Sky" flower has a different starry pattern. Gillies leans over to smell a...

  • Water district team prevents overflow

Tina Fisher Cunningham, Fisher Forde Media|Jun 22, 2019

The Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District (TCCWD) team of employees had their hands full when a confluence of unusual conditions impacted the pumping operations in May. In anticipation of the normal demand for agricultural water, the big pumps were importing the maximum toward the goal of 10,000 acre feet (AF) for the year. The Importation replenished Jacobsen Reservoir (Brite Lake) 300 AF in April. Then the rains came and the temperature dropped. "We could see no end of the rain," water...

  • A great short story

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Jun 22, 2019

A great short story dangles a mood or theme, like bait. It immediately catches the eye and the imagination. Sometimes our hearts. But it must do so quickly, with the speed of light or, in this fast paced world, readers move on. As with poetry, each and every word counts. The writer looks for the most precise all encompassing words to draw readers in and capture them completely, with memorable characters and themes, ranging from the ordinary to extraordinary. They nail the voice, set the plot on...

    Linda Ellsworth Crisalli|Jun 22, 2019

Start at the beginning, for Part 1 click HERE Part 4, by Hank Rogers I've always thought that we can only know what we know, and that to believe without knowledge is for fools. Still, there are things – sometimes near unbelievable things, that we may never know. Lylah, the wife, is different than me, particularly now that the kids are grown and on their own over on the coast. She has less to occupy her, and time for dreaming. "Bill, I'm not crazy, I've seen these strange lights on the mountain l...

The idea for a Tehachapi Comic Con came from the library's Teen Advisory Board, which plans and organizes a variety of Teen Fandom events, like the yearly May the Fourt...

I've subscribed to "HeroicStories, Restoring Faith in Humanity One Story at a Time" (www.HerociStories.org) for a few years, and a couple of weeks ago as I was perusing my inbox, I saw one from them titled...
