The 4th of July is a reason to celebrate for many Americans, but this year the members of the Tehachapi Heritage League have an additional reason, it is the 50th birthday of the opening of Tehachapi's first museum. The Heritage League was formed by a small, but dedicated group of people in early 1973. The purpose was to preserve the cultural, historic and natural resources of the Tehachapi area; to open and maintain a museum and to serve as an educational source for individuals, schools and...

I always enjoy reading this poem titled "Because I fly" by retired Air Force pilot and Vietnam Veteran, Major Brian Shul: Because I fly, I laugh more than other men. I look up and see more than they. I know how the clouds feel, what it's like to have the blue in my lap, to look down on birds, to feel freedom in a thing called the stick . . . Who but I can slice between God's billowed legs, and feel them laugh and crash with His step? Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks? The rainbow's secret? T...
Alicen Schneider and Ben Eshbach have been living in Tehachapi for about a year. Like many others during the pandemic, they wanted to get away from the LA area. Ben had family living in Tehachapi, so it seemed an ideal place to look. As head of TV Music at NBC Universal, Alicen felt she could still commute to her job three days a week or so. They found a house that they liked but it was a bit of a fixer-upper. While they were considering the purchase, their house in Burbank sold. The real...

Look for a new sponsor at this year's Bad Bulls on the 4th of July and the PRCA Rodeo held during Mountain Festival weekend. Although Cowboys and Angels have had a booth at these events in the past, this year Joanne Nicks has become a sponsor of the events. Joanne said at both events she will be featuring cowboy hats galore to shade the spectators from the summer sun. They can also expect to find a wide selection of boots during the events. Other specialties in her booth will include tooled-leat...

I've had a rough few weeks lately, which explains my absence in the last issue of The Loop, but I'm pretty much back to normal now ("normal" for me, anyway). I took myself to Kaiser's urgent care in Lancaster one day because my left foot was swollen up and I couldn't put weight on it without a great deal of pain. I was told I probably had a sprained ankle and was fitted with a walking boot, which I was to wear for a week. At the end of that week, when I was still in a lot of pain and unable to...

We read and hear a lot about other parts of the world, but actually visiting and experiencing another culture in person is quite different. Not only has Tehachapi resident and Cerro Coso's Anthropology and Sociology professor, Alec Griffin, traveled through 43 countries, he has also had some exciting and terrifying experiences along the way. Traveling to Cairo in 2013, 11 days after a coupe d'état deposed President Morsi, was among some of the craziest. The pyramids and Cairo museum were empty...

There used to be a radio program whose host gave news as it was supposed to have happened. After telling the tale, he would then say, "...and now, for the rest of the story." He would then give some interesting facts that completed the tale. His name was Paul Harvey. I'm no Paul Harvey but it seems that when I hear someone telling a story about an experience of a local or long past happening, I often remember a little tidbit that was left out of the tale and I want to add it. Usually, I try to...
We had a fantastic turn out for the 2023 TNAZ Cruizin car show at the Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, June 17. The event packed in 81 hot rods, custom cars, one of a kind build cars and many classic cars. There really was something for everyone. There was even a bounce house, zip line, gaga ball and a variety of food. Music as well by the Dave's Not Here band. It's always fun to talk with car people at shows and the track. I got to talk my friends Hans and Rachel Kahl who are big time car...

We continue to look to you to share your skills with us and those new coming into this unit," Gates said. Dory Kline responded, "It's been my honor to serve so many others." When you hear the name of the Kern County city of Ridgecrest, do you immediately think to yourself: "Ah, that's near all the rock art." No? Well maybe you should, because the nearby Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake is home to the Coso Rock Art District, the largest concentration of prehistoric petroglyphs in all of the Northern Hemisphere. There are an incredible 100,000 individual rock carvings or more etched into the dark basalt boulders of the Coso Range, some of them believed to be...
This is a traditional Nuwä (Kawaiisu or Southern Paiute) story that was told for centuries to explain the origins of the world. It was collected by a Berkeley anthropologist named Theodore McCown, who in the summer of 1929 spent three months studying Nuwä elders in the mountains of eastern Kern County. Among the people that McCown interviewed was Raphael Girado, who would later become the father of Luther, Betty and Lucille Girado, who were instrumental in documentation and the teaching of the N...
"You earn your reputation in the arena, but you earn your respect in the barn." My story begins in the much the same way as every little girl who grew up with a passion for horses: My love and desire to ride at the famed Riata Ranch was more than passion – it was an addiction. I was enamored not only with all the horses, but the young women who became my mentors showing me the ins and outs of ranch life, horsemanship, team work and leadership training. I was very shy and insecure, so this kind o...
