  • Hooray for USDA, and Other Stuff

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Jun 25, 2016

This fall, the USDA home loan program is reducing its mortgage insurance premiums, which will make its loan program more affordable than ever. In context, it means that using USDA financing to buy a $200,000 house in October will cost about $25 per month less than it does today. Hooray for USDA! We had a moment last time to talk about mortgage fees, and a real-life scenario came up since then. A buyer had shopped their long-time credit union for a mortgage quote, then they called me. The credit...

  • Start Me Up

    Greg Cunningham|Jun 25, 2016

We’ve had a Start menu in Windows since Windows 95. It’s changed a bit in every version of Windows until that darn Windows 8 came along. I think some folks at Microsoft took a look at PC and laptop sales and decided we’d all be using tablets or phones, so they created a way more mobile device friendly operating system and figured that’s what people would want. They were wrong In Windows 8.1 Microsoft gave us back a kind-of-sort-of Start menu, but it didn’t make anyone happy. So, lots of people...

  • Not So Long Ago

    Pat Gracey|Jun 25, 2016

I was just reading Jon Hammond's fine article about local man, Rufus Thomas, showing his realistic miniature reproductions of the once common oil derricks which, at one time, dotted the countryside. At present, the works of art are on display at our local museum. They are a part of the past but not so long ago past that it can still make some of us recall the sea of black oil derricks dotting the landscape in the San Joaquin Valley. Some years ago when passenger trains used to run through Tehach...

  • Exercise and Dementia

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Jun 25, 2016

I went to an all-day seminar yesterday for updates on dementia in general including Alzheimer’s disease. The speaker was a neurologist who is also a researcher in the field. Among the topics explored were whether any particular foods could slow or detour the onset of Alzheimer’s and what other measures could be taken to avoid dementia. His responses on this made sense. There are certain conditions that seem to increase the risk, especially of vascular dementia where the brain is damaged because of multiple strokes or clogged/ damaged blood ves...

  • Tehachapi's Seed Crop

    Mayor Susan Wiggins|Jun 25, 2016

This week I found an article in a 1957 copy of the Tehachapi News that had reprinted an article from the Fresno Bee in my mom’s files. The article was written by Leo Dollar, following a tour he took of the Tehachapi Valley’s seed industry. At that time Tehachapi was certified as one of the primary seedgrowing areas in the United States. Dollar wrote “This little mountain community, snugly bedded in a cool valley 4,000 feet above the San Joaquin Valley, is demonstrating for the agricultural world the old saying that good things come in small...

  • It's Ok to Water Trees

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District|Jun 25, 2016

Trees are having a tough time right now because of the drought. Nobody knows better than residents of Bear Valley Springs and other forested areas. The drought has weakened the trees and left them more vulnerable to bark beetles, mistletoe, and other pests and diseases. When was the last time you took a good look at the trees in your yard or along your street? How many of us have a tree in the middle of the lawn, and have stopped (or at least reduced) watering the lawn. That tree had an easy life up until now, and didn’t need to grow its r...

  • Testimonial From an Acne Client

    Jun 25, 2016

This is a testimonial received from the mother of one of my young acne clients. While I do have several mature acne clients, it's the teens I believe, who suffer the most: "One day in July, 2015, I read an article in our local paper that was written by Donita, on the subject of acne. I could not feel hopeful at this point given all that we had been through in the last several years, but I told my daughter, Emmy Beth Sturckow, we would give this a try. "I scheduled an appointment and loved what...

  • What is Emotional Abuse or EA?

    Dr. Kevin Belsby|Jun 25, 2016

As a therapist, I am often asked about the characteristics of emotional abuse (EA). Essentially, EA is any attitude or behavior that uses humiliation or fear or verbal degradation to control, demean, punish or isolate another person. Yelling and screaming and name-labeling are the most readily understood forms of EA. However, the more subtle strategies of isolating an individual from family and friends or quashing another person’s thoughts or feelings are also types of EA. EA often has an incapa...

  • Not-so-lazy Days of Summer

    Sheila Zanghi|Jun 25, 2016

When I was young I stayed on my uncle’s farm during the summer. They farmed feed corn, wheat, and hay and had a dairy herd, pigs, and chickens. Their garden for household use was huge. Most of the produce would be canned and used during winter. My cousin and I would get the vegetables for the meal fresh from the garden. It was fun and tasted great especially after taking a detour through the strawberry patch! Our customers get what they need to make their gardens successful from us at Pioneer T...

  • Five Years After the Shuttle

    Dale Hawkins|Jun 25, 2016

President Obama is a lame duck. That means that his primary focus is no longer on bold plans for the future, but on what his administration has accomplished over the last eight years – his legacy. My personal feeling is that history will judge him to have been a decent president; not stellar, but not bad. He came into office with a global economy in chaos and an America entangled in a nightmarishly complex international situation. Yet, we're now doing fairly well when viewed from a global perspe...

  • A Hawk's Tale

    Jun 25, 2016

Driving home from work, on April 20, 2016, I saw a bird in the middle of the road, and assumed it was a Raven, which would normally fly away as cars approached, but this bird didn't. As I got closer, it was apparent that this was a red tailed hawk, and it looked right at me as I slowly drove by. It was apparent that he needed help, so I turned my truck around. After pulling off the road, I ran out to pick him up and brought him to the truck. Both of us safely seat-belted, I headed home. Once we...

Board member Darrel Brown stated, "Our foundation represents the city as well as our police department. We are in the forefront of the public eye. • WWII, Korea Battle Veteran Enlisted at 15

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files|Jun 25, 2016

George M. Williamson, 87, of Bear Valley Springs, saw fierce action in WWII and Korea; the Marines called him again during Vietnam. George Williamson was 12 years old in 1941 when the expanding Japanese empire attacked Pearl Harbor and drew the United States into the global conflict that had been going on since 1939. A native of Cincinnati, Williamson had lost his parents in a car accident. His mother's sister adopted him, and he went to live on the forested, sparsely populated Mercer Island,...

  • Catch and release

    Craig R. Stockton, Owner of Treasures eConsignment|Jun 25, 2016

Summer is upon us and the kids are out of school, vacation time is here and perhaps some time to go fishing. One of the least talked about subjects when it comes to angling is proper catch and release technique. Now I know many of you are catch, filet and cook folks put for a few years now many anglers have taken to releasing their catch back into the lake or stream. For me I started practicing catch and release 20 years ago when sport fishing in the ocean. Back then, you could bag 20 fish in...

  • 'Hate Has No Business Here'

    Nancy Bacon, Reverend|Jun 25, 2016

Recently, I saw this poster, “Hate Has No Business Here” at an elementary school. It was refreshing to see these words while children from different cultures played on the playground. Boys and girls wearing stocking and baseball caps, braided ponytails, and hijabs, filled with energy, running and laughing - playing - what beautiful sounds together they made. The poster (which can be downloaded from mainstreetalliance.org or discussed at #hatehasnobizhere) specified: “We stand with our LGBTQ comm...
