  • Cowgirl Balladeer Juni Fisher, plays July 10

    Deborah Hand-Cutler|Jul 4, 2015

Juni Fisher is no stranger to these parts. She has already given three sold-out concerts in Fiddlers Crossing and will ride into town July 10 for her fourth appearance. Fisher is the real deal – a Western singer who actually IS a cowgirl. Many of her songs are about women rodeo riders of bygone days, and she can be funny and poignant at the same time. Fisher grew up horse crazy on a San Joaquin Valley citrus farm, achieving 4-H and FFA honors, listening to the music of Marty Robbins, Joan Baez and Burl Ives, and learning Western songs from h...

  • Bill calls for abortion info at pro-life centers

Tina Fisher Cunningham, The Forde Files No 98|Jul 4, 2015

California Assembly Bill 775, which is nearing a Senate vote and a likely party-line approval (Democrats for, Republicans against), would order all medically licensed pro-life pregnancy centers in the state to post a prominent sign telling clients how to get information on securing abortions. The law also would order non-medical pregnancy centers to post a sign in 48-point type (see sidebar) stating clearly that the facility does not provide medical care. The bill, backed by Planned Parenthood...

    Jul 4, 2015

Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District Water Conservation Coordinator Liz Block created classes on water-efficient gardening and climate-appropriate plants to accompany the anticipated receipt of a Bureau of Reclamation grant for turf removal rebates. The grant did not come through but the classes are still on. “There are so many emergency water needs right now,” she said, “we decided to give the classes anyway.” The classes promise to show the way to “a more interesting landscape that changes with the seasons and shows the character...

  • Encroachment on Airports

    Cathy Hansen|Jul 4, 2015

I support keeping Santa Monica Airport open, as a matter of fact, I support keeping all airports open that are being threatened by encroachment. Santa Monica and other airports have received grant money from the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) for upgrades for runways, taxiways and other infrastructure, which is our tax dollars at work. The growth of the surrounding towns and cities should not have the option of closing the airports that were first attractive, but later fell into disfavor....

Her program will present Technical Large Animal Rescue (TLAER) Awareness. Fiona has a delightful way of pairing education with vivid story-telling, and we’re excited for this upcoming presentation. When first discussing the wide range of topics with Fiona on what she could present, she recommended this particular subject for several reasons. She spoke of an accident on the highway that invol...

  • TUSD plans independent learning academy

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Jul 4, 2015

For the last couple of years, the Tehachapi Unified School District has been looking to expand its home-based study program. With the June 24 board approval to hire a dean for the Tehachapi Independent Learning Academy in the 2015-2016 school-year, that expansion appears to be becoming a reality. • Make a file disappear – forever

    Greg Cunningham|Jul 4, 2015

Deleting files – You come in to the office on Monday morning after a great office party, turn on your computer and find, to your horror, that sometime during the party you wrote a tremendously awful love poem to one of your coworkers. What can you do? When you have a document, image, or video on your computer that you really, really want to delete, it takes more than just hitting Delete or dropping it in the trash or recycle bin on your desktop. The trash bin hides the file so you can’t see it...

  • Landscapes for the future

Liz Block, Water Conservation Coordinator, Tehachapi-Cummings Co Water Dis|Jul 4, 2015

I’ve heard lots of ideas about where we could get more water: Oregon, desalination. I say let’s go out into space, grab an ice comet, and land it right in Brite Lake! Like it or not, our California climate is becoming warmer and drier. A vast green lawn may become a luxury few of us can afford. TCCWD applied for a grant to do a lawn removal rebate program but we were turned down. There are too many emergency water supply projects that need funding. So we’re giving the classes anyways! Classes are free, and include breakfast treats and beverages...

  • Look what came to dinner!

    Edna McCalliion|Jul 4, 2015

The barbeque was sizzling and I was setting up for alfresco dining. A gathering of raucous ravens were raging near the top of an old oak. Looking up, I could see what was at the center of their ranting. A bear, curled up in napping fashion and not disturbed by the commotion. I, on the other hand, was anxious! Lickety-split our arriving dining companions were rushed into the house. None among us had ever seen a bear this close in the wild. We looked all around our property to see if the interloper brought any friends. None to be found! Keeping a...
