A mini-forest has sprouted at Tehachapi High School. After vandals cut down about two dozen trees in May, a group of nearly 130 volunteers took to the soil and replanted not only the destroyed trees, but a handful of extras as well. The incident, which was originally believed to be a senior prank, led to a lot of hurting hearts and an angry community. While other destruction took place on campus, like gluing coins over keyholes, those actions seem to be merely an annoyance, while the trees were...

If you're working with a local lender, you may already know about the USDA's Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program. It works when buying in our zip code and allows for no down payment. The catch? There are income limits involved. That is, for a 4-person household you'd need to make less than $82,700 per year, in total. For larger families, the limit is $109,150 per year. These figures are an increase of about $5,000 over last year's income limits. What it means in practical terms is...
The eighth annual Mule, Donkey, and Horse Show is coming to Bear Valley Springs Equestrian Center on Aug. 3, 4 and 5. It's the second largest mule and donkey show in the state. Being sanctioned by the American Mule Association, competitors from California, Nevada and Arizona will attend. The BVS Pony Club is sponsoring and hosting the show this year, allowing for an expanded class list. Many of the new classes are "fun and user friendly" and designed for average riders. The Pony Club invites...

Hey, congratulations; you've got a new phone. You (or the helpful people at the store) activated your new phone and you're all logged in and ready to go. Before you go out and use your phone to shoot a video of your nephew jumping onto a trampoline from the roof, let's talk about settings. All Android and Apple phones contain a dizzying array of settings. From a security and privacy standpoint, here are the ones you may want to change. Lock it down You probably covered this already while...
I found a year end budget report for the city of Tehachapi for 1957 and set it aside until it was closer to this year's budget adoption, which is now. The June 30, 1957 ending balance totaled $56,361.20. There was an income of $71,356.57, and expenditures of $14,995.37. The 2018-19 city budget, which was recently approved by the city council, totals $20,987,036, with projected expenditures totaling $19,358,761. The 1957 report does not list the source of income but merely listed the bank...
Cooler Tehachapi temperatures drew dancers from all over Kern County to come and enjoy a night of dancing during the Tehachapi Gandy Dancers Square Dance Club's June Bug Dance. Representatives from the Mountain Squares of Frazier Park and the Bakersfield Rounders, joined the Gandy Dancers for a great night of dancing and camaraderie. Darren Gallina came from Lompoc to provide outstanding calls for the square dancers. Darrell Beck of Tehachapi provided cueing to a number of ballads and waltzes...
There's an HIV shelter in Tijuana, Mexico, that brings me close to Jesus. Albergue Las Memorias is an amazing place of men, women and children who live in community caring for one another. When people first arrive, they are often quite ill, given a bed and nursed back to health by other residents. Once they are restored to health they do the same for the next incoming folks. I see biblical stories come to life whenever our church visits this place. Prodigal drug users are welcomed back "home," g...
Tehachapi's got talent. No that isn't the name of a new variety show for network television, although I do believe we could fill a few hours of air time with some folks in our community, but that's another story. Our talent is our workforce, the people we supply to companies both in and out of the area. Those people who choose to make a career in the private sector in several industries that surround our community. These businesses invest millions in talent attraction efforts, bonuses, stipends...
Mullenax Ranch of Tehachapi is introducing their mobile goat yoga program with baby Nigerian Dwarf Goats, a miniature breed of dairy goat. With classes in Tehachapi and throughout the state, including such events as "Goat Yoga & Wine" and "Goats & Grilled Cheese" there's enough to "goat around." Goat Yoga is a beginner-level yoga class, where goats walk and play at-will around participants. They use certified instructors local to the area. The ranch utilizes baby goats from their miniature...
The second of three free "Concerts in the Park" will feature Sligo Rags, a rollicking Celtic "pub" band with a "decidedly bluegrass attitude." The concert will take place on Sunday, July 15 at 2 p.m. at Philip Mark Central Park in downtown Tehachapi. Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District (TVRPD) in association with Fiddlers Crossing, TPOPS (Tehachapi Pops Orchestra) and MusicMX entertainment has revived the summer concert series this year. Sligo Rags wowed the audience at Fiddlers...
Fiddlers Crossing prides itself in bringing performers from every corner of America and beyond to play in Tehachapi. In addition to the United States, musicians and singers from Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, The Shetland Islands, Germany, Switzerland and South Africa have performed at the downtown venue's concert series over the eight years that it has been in existence. One part of the world that has not been represented thus far is Australia or New...
I don't often talk about the dogs here, but they are an integral part of the ranch. If you have been here, you have probably met most of them. At the very least, you have spent time with Doug, Dolly and Lady. Each dog here comes from the pound or a situation of need and I highly recommend that if you are looking for a dog, you start at your local animal shelter. These dogs know they were rescued and they are grateful. I will never understand how anyone can take a 12-year-old dog to the shelter a...

Shani December, a member of the organizing group, said this was the first public gathering of the Tehachapi group and that its goal is to, "help build community here in town." The picnic drew well over a hundred supporters and members of the Tehachapi LGBT community. According to the Library of Congress website LGBT Pride Month originated with the 1969 Stonewall riots,...

A few days ago I drove up our Golden Hills street to our mailbox. I had quite a bit of mail and was putting it into a bag when I noticed a Package Box key on the ground. Thinking I had dropped it as I picked up my mail, I opened the package box wondering what I had waiting for me. Oops! The package was not for me! Someone else had dropped the key. I could not just leave it in the box with the key there for anyone to find. The person to whom it was addressed did not even know she had a package,...
This story I'm offering up today – actually a story and a little story within the story – is one of the favorite ones I've received lately. I don't know who wrote it (that "Author Unknown" is quite prolific!), but I think it is a wonderful idea, a wonderful message, and a wonderful way to think of things. Here you go: A young woman was diagnosed with a terminal illness and given three months to live. As she was getting her affairs in order, she contacted her pastor to discuss her final wis...
Main Street Tehachapi presented the community with a delightful evening event on June 23. Main Street arranged three wine sampling stops around town. Each stop featured wines to taste and music to listen enjoy. At the Tehachapi Visitor Center guests were offered country music and a choice of a red, white or bubbly wine to sample. Tasters could then move over to Centennial Plaza to sample wine and listen to Swing/Big Band music. Closing out the evening many samplers went to Railroad Park where...

Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District held their third public meeting on June 28 to discuss the possibility of a new community center and upgrades to the existing park facilities to be possibly financed by a bond measure. This meeting was streamed live on Facebook for those who could not make the meeting. TVRPD General Manager Michelle Vance said that the district has made a commitment to (1) listen to the community, (2) to make the project for everyone, (3) to stay on budget, (4) to...
In 2012, I wrote a story about the Lockheed EC-121 Constellation or Super Connie that was sitting at Camarillo Airport and my son, Mark Burdick was helping Yank's Air Museum get it ready for a ferry flight to Chino. Just recently Mark wrote his recollections of the project and I thought you might enjoy hearing from the mechanics point of view. See you on our next flight! –Cathy Hansen I ran across this video. It's the ferry flight of the EC-121 Constellation I worked on over in Camarillo. I s...
