Last month I mentioned that I would introduce the other horses at the ranch. So, here goes. California Curl (barn name Curls) is a 9-year-old chestnut mare. Her sire was Curlin, a two-time winner of Horse of the Year. Besides being the nicest horse on the ranch, Curls, along with sire Clubhouse Ride, produced my good buddy, Rider. Lovehi is a 14-year-old chestnut mare. And keeping it in the family, Lovehi is the mother of California Curl, and grandmother to Rider. Lovehi had a very successful...
From time to time I receive little stories like this one from friends and readers, that I like to share with you all. This one (author unknown but credited online to several different people) especially struck a note with me, as so many people these days like to complain about everything. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did: I was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing I noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly...

I've enjoyed seeing a couple of pairs of California Quail (Callipepla californica) that were hanging around the houses and outbuildings of our old farm last month, calling to each other with the classic quail phrase that's heard so often throughout the Tehachapi Mountains: "Come-back-here!" or "Ca-KERR-cow!" These quail pairs leisurely make their way up the dirt driveway and adjacent grassy areas in the middle of the morning, unhurriedly pecking at seeds and small insects. Songbirds, by...

So, your battery is what gets your engine started, but once the engine's running, your alternator is what's turning out the power. A failing...
