  • Mixing it up: asset allocation and diversification

    Lance Patton, Financial Advisor|Jul 20, 2024

Asset allocation and diversification are so fundamental to portfolio structure that it's easy to lose sight of these strategic tools as you track the performance of specific securities or the dollar value of your investments. It might be worth considering how these strategies relate to each other and to the risk and potential performance of your portfolio. Keep in mind that asset allocation and diversification are methods used to help manage investment risk; they do not guarantee a profit or...

We all had a blast, but it took a lot of practicing and work to get it done....

  • More to a stadium...more to a dish

    Corey Costelloe, contributing writer|Jul 20, 2024

A good stadium experience isn't only about the team you are cheering for, but potentially that one food item that while secondary to the reason for your trip, can make or break your entire experience. I have had the privilege of attending and covering sporting events all over the country and given that it is summertime and we have reached the midway point of the baseball season, I figured I can share some culinary musts that have made some of my ballpark trips worthwhile. First, in full...

  • Remembering the day

    Pat Gracey, contributing writer|Jul 20, 2024

Few would elect to be in a major disaster, but if you've experienced one, there is a kinship with those who also shared the catastrophe that creates a lasting camaraderie. People sometimes ask, "What were you doing when Kennedy was shot?" The same question about Sept. 11, 2001. Many just call it 9/11. We all remember events such as those but as time passes, and the people who were there also pass, the event itself dims. Franklin Roosevelt said that the attack on Pearl Harbor is a date that...

  • Soaring sailplanes in the Tehachapi Valley (part 2)

    Mark LaCiura, contributing writer|Jul 20, 2024

This is a continuation of the article in the July 6 issue of The Loop newspaper. My longest flight was straight out up the Southern Sierra Nevada range to Olancha Peak near Lone Pine California. I was ultra conservative with all my sailplane flying, learning from all my great flight instructors during my 35 years of flying. Some higher mileage treks were 200 to 400 miles in an eight hour flight by the sailplane community back then. Olancha Peak is at an elevation of 12,132 feet on the...

  • Old Town Road: a picturesque lane from an earlier century

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Jul 20, 2024

One of my favorite roads in the Tehachapi area is also one of the oldest, a curving, undulating belt of pavement that meanders over foothills on the western end of the valley and is known as Old Town Road. The original purpose of this venerable roadway is suggested by its name, and in fact it once served to connect a string of ranches, farms and homesteads with the first little town center of Tehachapi. Only it wasn't known as "Tehachapi" at first. The initial cluster of settlers' buildings in...

  • You've Got Mail?

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Jul 20, 2024

Mail delivery used to be the highlight of the day. The mailman would drive up to the box by the road or drop mail through the slot in the door, and the sound would have everyone running to see if perhaps they "got mail." My grandmother wrote often and profusely about both the growth and bloom of each flower in her garden, and the death of every person in her community, whether we were acquainted or not. It didn't matter. It was a connection. In early America, letters with family news and importa...
