  • Are you ready for another lap?

    Mark Burdick, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

Hello, there. Let's continuing my adventure into the wonderful world of auto racing. As I got older it wasn't just auto racing that interested me. Having been born into an aircraft family, I was also interested in high performance aircraft. I had the unique opportunity to help my dad maintain an F4U-7 Corsair. This WW2 vintage aircraft was also an air racer. We went with this airplane to the Reno air races for several years in a row. It was quite an exhilarating experience being around, and...

  • Thankful for great memories

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

I am easily diverted when I start looking at some of the old photos on my computer and realize that my husband Al and I shared a wonderful life together. Al and I enjoyed the community of aerospace pilots and engineers who seem to gravitate to Mojave Air and Space Port. We met so many famous people in the aerospace community. One such person was William "Bill" Dana, a native of California. He graduated the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served four years in the U. S. Air Force. Bill...

  • Planning for the inevitable

    Jason Wheeler, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

It is never an easy discussion and, even in today’s world, is often considered a hush hush topic. I am, of course, speaking about death. Often, when the subject of death comes up, we shy away from it ... not wanting to accept the inevitable. We even choose to avoid reading about it and, if you have made it this far into this article, I applaud you. Unfortunately, the choice to not contemplate what happens after we leave this earth can cause added grief for those we leave behind, cause them to struggle unnecessarily when we pass on. As one of t...

  • A quick trip to Ojai

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

My friend Leila wanted to visit friends – Sandy and Baruska – in Ojai the other day, and I was delighted to be invited to join her. We took off about 9:30 in the morning and got to her friend's home, right in the center of Ojai, about 12:30. I know Ojai is a great destination for many reasons, but I also want to mention how much love the drive there. Once you get to the I-5 at Gorman you're in some pretty magnificent mountains... and, it should be mentioned, a whole lot of traffic. That doesn't...

However, Jennifer admitted that as much as they liked Kernville, it was just too remote. Their son Christopher and his family were living in Tehachapi, so tha...

  • What do sleep, shut down and restart do?

    Greg Cunningham, owner of Tech-hachapi|Jul 22, 2023

What happens when you put your computer to sleep? What's the difference between restarting your computer, shutting it down, and turning it back on? Sleep When you put your computer to sleep, it goes into low-power mode. In this mode, the display turns off, your computer saves its current state (open files or browser tabs, etc.) to memory, and it stops sending power to most hardware. As long as your computer is getting power, when you turn it back on, it will start up instantly, and look just...

  • What is estate planning?

    Diana Wade, LDA|Jul 22, 2023

In a fundamental sense, estate planning is about control. With an appropriate estate plan in place, you, not the courts (or anyone else you would not choose), decide who will have control of the distribution of your assets and make financial decisions on your behalf in the event of your death or disability. You can also arrange who will make decisions about your medical care and end-of-life issues, or about who will have legal custody of your minor or disabled children. Properly structured, an...

However, if you've invested regularly and followed a long-term financial strategy, you should be able to address most issues that come your way. But there's one important action that's sometimes overlooked by retirees: sharing their financial situation with their grown children. And this knowledge can benefit everyone in your family. You might be surprised by the concern your children have for your...

  • Have bag, will travel

    Marty Pay, MBA, CLU, LUTC-F, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

Anybody who has done any traveling in this post COVID and 9/11 world has experienced the rush of having your luggage in one zip code while you're in another. The only other equal rush is watching your bag go left instead of right on the turnstile which means you get to wait for a customs officer to go through your bag with a fine-tooth comb (as long as it's regulation length). Murphy's Law being what it is, this event will always happen when you've got only a few minutes to make a flight due to...

  • A couple of thoughts...

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

Freefall with your gift Wynona Judd was on "Good Morning America" one time a few years ago, talking about the stage fright she always gets before she performs for live audiences. Even though she is a seasoned performer, she said she still gets nervous every time she goes on stage. She also said her nervousness mostly disappears after the first song or two, and then she feels all right. The important thing here, the thing that makes me remember this interview, is that even though Wynona...

  • High Summer in the Tehachapi Mountains

    Jon Hammond, contributing writer|Jul 22, 2023

It is now High Summer in the Tehachapi Mountains. After a very cool spring and early summer, high temperatures have finally caught up with us, and reached about 98 or 99 degrees Fahrenheit here over the weekend of July 15 and 16. Not record-setting, but still definitely hot. The hottest official temperature ever recorded in July in Tehachapi was in 1934, when the mercury reached 105 degrees. That is also the hottest temperature ever recorded here, according to National Weather Service archives....

  • Hat Ranch: the graveyard for lost hats of the unwary

    Jul 22, 2023

Tehachapi Pass and Oak Creek Pass are known for being windy (hence all the wind turbines), which is typical of mountain passes. But the nearby desert town of Mojave has breezes that range from mild zephyrs to irrational blustery gales, and there are times when the wind never seems to abate. And it was the wind that once created a most unusual crop on a piece of desert land outside Mojave. Local residents called the patch of brush the "Hat Ranch" because anyone could go there and get any style...
