What is a virtual private network (VPN), and why would you want one? If we break it down starting from the back, a network is a bunch of computers and devices with similar addresses that can "see" and interact with each other. Private means you need to be a member or have a key to get in. Having a private network means you need to be connected to the network and have a username and a password to join in on all the fun. Virtual means, in this case, we're describing physical objects that you...

I have witnessed that myself in life, from sparkling gems of treasure to simple perfect words like “I Love You” written on a sticky note and wrapped exquisitely inside the tiniest box. Creative and effective. I came by “Bonds of Love and Blood” by Marylee MacDonald quite by an accident of fortune. A compilation of 12 short stories, MacDonald uses each word precisely, and her choices of venue and character with artistic refinement. She brings you aro...

Wearing down, wearing out As you roll on down the road, the rubber on...

I really love towns like this, they had 45-50 people at the Christmas in July event at Marty Pay Farmers Insurance and they collected between 325-350 toys, all of which will stay locally in your wonderful community. The heart of this town was on display in the weeks leading up to the event. Drop off stations where all throughout the city. Tehachapi Martial Arts has always been great gathering of...

After two years of preparation, Art 2021 held their opening gala on July 23. Nearly 270 artists and guests mingled and helped themselves to hors d'oeuvres provided by Bord A Petite of Bakersfield and wine provided by Dorner Family Vineyard as they strolled the aisles of paintings. For many it was a chance to talk to the artists and, in some cases, purchase a painting. Most of the art was the result of the paint-out held in May when the artists visited Tehachapi to paint the local landscape. For...

There are many different ways in which a business is conducted in California. Selecting the most appropriate form of business enterprise for an individual or a group of individuals involves careful consideration of a variety of factors. Businesses often act through designated individuals called agents who conduct their operations, and the law of agency governs many legal...

Sometimes it's interesting to read little timelines listing events of many years ago. I don't really live in the past, but it's interesting to find out what people were doing in this little valley when Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ben Franklin and "the rest of the boys" were signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776 back on the east side of the country, as well as including a couple of hundred other years, just for fun. 1776 – Padre Francisco Garces traverses Tehachapi Pass with f...
WARNING: This article contains graphic content. Reader discretion is advised. Born on Dec. 21, 1947, in Red Bluff, California, Todd was the eldest of six children. His father, from a poor family, was a truck driver and a veteran of World War II (he had somehow managed to enlist at the tender age of 15!) and the Korean War. Todd's mother was a stay-at-home mom, who, no...

My dad always loved the idea of flying, of being up in the air. As a kid he made paper and wood airplanes, and learned as much as he could about flying. And when the time came he joined the Navy and learned to fly for himself. He was a Navy pilot for 10 years. One thing led to another and he left the Navy, went back to school and became a doctor, and eventually bought his own airplane, a Beechcraft Debonair which we named Tocamasa (letters from the names of our little family of four). As a...
The Have A Heart Humane Society, located here in Tehachapi, has been well known for years and we have been your "go to" organization when you adopt a pet, lose a pet, find a stray pet, or need to alter your pets so they don't contribute to the dreadful overpopulation here in Kern County. Have A Heart holds the concept of spay and neuter as just about the most important facet of our vision, and not one that we could let go of when things got tough! Instead, the "tough" (that's us!) got going and...
