  • Ugly but not broken

    Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor|Aug 1, 2015

Lately we’ve been seeing appraisals come back with commentary requiring repairs be made before the close of escrow. What triggers this situation? Generally houses need to be free of “health and safety” issues in order to be finance-able. And, a reasonable buyer wants a house that is safe and secure and free of major defects. There are two stages in a normal purchase. During the course of buying a home, the buyer usually hires a home inspector to comment on the condition of the home. This entai...

  • Meet your new neighbors

    Pat Doody, Welcome Hostess|Aug 1, 2015

David and Carol Faber moved to Tehachapi this spring from Paso Robles where they had lived for 20 years. They told me that it had just become too crowded. When it came time to retire, they decided that it was time to make a move. Four of their grandchildren were in Bakersfield so they thought Tehachapi would be a great choice. They brought Carol’s mother and sister with them as well as Molly, their twelve year old Basset/Lhasa Apso mix. Both David and Carol had worked for the Department of C...

  • Research: Fact or fiction

    Victoria Alwin, MSRD|Aug 1, 2015

There seems to be so much information “out there” on just about every topic imaginable. Being a dietitian, I get asked about the newest nutrition item on the internet or on the TV news. Depending on the claim being made, I do what I advise everyone to do: look up the research behind the claim. I know what to look for. Do you? First, look at the source of the information presented: CBS news or Alien Abduction Weekly. Many online sources will cite the original study or at least the name of the researcher or the journal in which the study was prin...

  • Trapping pocket gophers in Tehachapi

    Betty Finch, ontributing writer|Aug 1, 2015

Named after the skin pouches, or "pockets" on the sides of their face used for carrying plant material, Rodentia Geomyidae, or Pocket Gophers live in abundance in the Tehachapi area. Most of the gophers in our area are slightly smaller than the gophers in the San Joaquin Valley, averaging 4 to 6 inches long. Their small beady eyes and long front teeth make it a stretch to call them cute. Gophers are solitary creatures. Except for a mother raising her young or brief breeding encounters they live...

  • Urban coyote

    Mark Fisher, Doc|Aug 1, 2015

Now, “urban coyote” is not some re-imagined movie starring John Travolta. Urban coyotes are in fact “a thing”. I have been looking at some articles on animals (and other things) for a project I’ve been fiddling with on the natural history of the area. One of the topics I’ve been reading that has been of special interest to me is that of coyotes in an urban environment. Now according to the research, Tehachapi isn’t really an urban area – not enough population or population density. We are...

  • Godly Play – The spiritual life of children

    Wayne Thompson, Guest Columnist|Aug 1, 2015

At our little church on the corner, Tehachapi Community UCC, we have a new Sunday school program, 'Godly Play', that teaches children how the traditions and stories of religion are all about their own growing feelings and experiences. I never went to Sunday school when I was a kid. I never learned to practice a specific religion, but I know now that simply being logical does not make a person 'happy'. A good human knows about logic and science, but also knows about complexity and spirit, the dee...

    Robyn Thompson|Aug 1, 2015

On Sunday, August 23, at 5 PM, do NOT go to the Hollywood Bowl. Let the Hollywood Bowl come to you through the musical talents of violinist Paul Stein. • Team Walkabout at Relay for Life

    Terence G. Brady, Brady Chiropractic|Aug 1, 2015

I would like to publicly thank everyone who helped and contributed to Team Walkabout's success in this year's Tehachapi Relay for Life. It was our first attempt as a team and we raised the fantastic amount of $5,500, which brought us in 4th or 5th among all 33 teams. Great job. The entire group raised over $74, 000 for The American Cancer Society. My special thanks goes to Cathy Criger for all the effort she put into selling tickets, making five quilts to raffling off, and making the really...

  • Tehachapi Area General Plan – 1958

    Susan Wiggins, Mayor|Aug 1, 2015

Conducting my usual “digging” through my mother Marion Deaver’s files, I stumbled onto an Outline of Major Assumptions, Policies and Proposals for the Tehachapi Area General Plan in 1958. In light of the recent retirement of City Planner David James, who was instrumental in designing the city’s new General Plan in recent years, I thought it would be interesting to see how the city began its process for a general plan in 1958. I found a report to the Citizens’ Committee of the Tehachapi Planning...

  • Summertime striper fishing

    Craig R. Stockton, Owner of Treasures eConsignment|Aug 1, 2015

This is one of the great times of the year to be at any of Southern California’s premier lakes that hold large quantities of striper. Castaic, Pyramid and Silver wood, to name a few, are great for catching the feisty hard fighting fish. If you have never chased after and caught Stripers you have missed some of the most exciting fishing Southern California has to offer. During summer the “line sides” feed very aggressively on lake shade, small bass and perch. During summer–Stripers are fish on...

  • Types of long-term care

Jennifer Williams, President J. Williams Personal Financial Planning|Aug 1, 2015

What is long-term care? In general, long-term care refers to a broad range of medical and personal services designed to assist individuals who have lost their ability to function independently. The need for this ongoing care arises when you have a chronic disability or when physical/mental impairments prevent you from performing certain basic activities, such as feeding, bathing, dressing, transferring, and toileting. What are the three levels of long-term care? Because some long-term care...

  • My spiritual journey

    Daniel C. Romeo, Guest Columnist|Aug 1, 2015

While pastor Nancy is away on vacation Daniel Romero was asked to share his experience at the 2015 37th 500 Mile American Indian Spiritual Marathon. During the month of March of this year, runners from the 500 Mile Spiritual Run visited the National Chavez Center, and I was invited to participate at that time. On June 20th of this year, I greeted the sunrise in the beautiful city of San Jose. It was a new day and I was looking forward to being part of the 500 Mile American Indian Spiritual Marathon. At 7 a.m. I arrived at my destination, which...

  • What's a serpentine belt?

    Protech Auto Service|Aug 1, 2015

All of us have those days when we've got a bunch of errands. Suppose on your day off you need to get gas, pick up some groceries, swing by your ATM and get the kids from school. Now you could make four trips, but that would be a waste of time and money – totally inefficient. Instead you get organized and hit the ATM first and get some gas next. Then you go to your supermarket and pick up the kids on the way home. Way better use of your time. Now you may wonder what this has to do with your vehicle. Well, back in the day, each of your e...

  • The Chase, by Dakota Gracy

    Pat Gracey|Aug 1, 2015

My grandson, Dakota Gracey, has been racing bikes for several years. Not just the kind of bike you hop on and ride around town. These are racing bikes designed for that purpose. When not racing he rides daily to keep in shape. Fifty to sixty miles, or often more, is his daily morning “wake up” ride. I had him write up a story about his First Place win in one of Baker City, Oregon’s Cycling Classics. These are his words for I am not familiar with biker vocabulary. THE CHASE by Dakota Grace...

Grab an ice cube! When you find or feel a pimple forming, grab an ice cube and rub it gently over the spot for 2-3 minutes, and keep it moving. Don’t let it sit in one place or you will ”burn” yourself. You can do this 2-3 times a day. Ice therapy will begin to reduce the inflammation and in some cases even stop the pimple from forming. Now available at Natural Health Massage & Spa: Soothie Q’s refreezeable, reusable “ice cube” on a stick! Don’t pick! The temptation is so great! What are you going to do with that big old pimple?
